M1-C, M1-D Where's A and B?

I recently saw an M1-D and it got me thinking. I know that there was a previous model the M1-C, but was there ever an M1-A or M1-B?
If there was no A or B, how did they come up with the M1-C designation?
Just curious if anyone knows this. I have been fruitless in my search for the answer so far. My best guess would be that the A and B were strictly experimental sniper variants of the M1, that for one reason or another proved unsatisfactory. Any thoughts?

This is a very involved area. Here is the short version of what dogrobber wrote:

Original developments items had a T designation. Each enchancement had an E designation. For instance T11E4 means:

T11=Eleventh trial in the category (Rifle, Grenade Launcher, Cleaning rod, etc.)
E4=Fourth Enhancement

As long as the item remains under development, these designations will apply. One day it gets standardized, or adopted. It gets the next M designation available in that category. In this case the T11E4 may become the M28 Widget. In the future a new characteristic is desired. The M28 Widget gets three new developments which are tested. They are the M28E1, M28E2, and M28E3. It is decided that the M28E3 is the preferred design. It is adopted as the M28A1, the first standardized enchancement.

Along comes the year 1957/58 (I am not sure). Everything changes. The next in line standardized item in this category is the M34 Widget. So the developmental version is the XM34 Widget. Two new enchancements and they are called XM34E1 and XM34E2. The XM34E2 is the prefered design and it is adopted as the M34 Widget. Years later a new requirement is tested in two versions, the M34E1 and M34E2. The E2 version is adopted and approved as the M34A1, standardized design.

I have caught several dealers humping items because they did not know the sequence or time lines of the developmental/adoption process. If anybody has any questions about what is stated above I can clarify.

As to the original posters question M1C and M1D, I have to do some look up work before I write what is in my mind. I want to double check.
