SMLM's anyone?

Any of you all stationed in the FRG ever have any contact or run-ins with a SMLM? For those of you not familiar with a SMLM ( Soviet Military Liasson Mission) vehicle. They were a legal spy or agent of sorts for the Soviets or a Soviet bloc country. As a military policeman with the 503rd, I had the occasional pleasure of dealing with them in the late 70's and early 80's. Anyone have an experience worth sharing?

Mike

I saw them a number of times on the Autobahn trailing US units. It was my understanding that sleuthed around Cav Kasernes quite a bit. We never saw them other than that with the 3 ID.

I think I was a lot Earlier!
1967.
I was stationed in Heidelberg, Patton Barracks/Campbell Barracks.
Old Panzer-kaserns.
I was in STRATCOM at the time.
HQ & HQ Co., USAEUR & 7th Army.
We had shifts 24-7.
Sometimes We Would Be Heading Downtown at 2AM!
There was a classic Beer Bar Way Downtown, near Die Schloss Und Die Alte Brucke...named something like 'Zepple's'!
It was one of those Ein, Zwei, Zufahrt Places!

Anyway...We were Not(Yet!) Tipsey, but the Spys Were!
They would buy us drinks, and drooling and slobbering, would ask us about our units...
We would just laugh at them...
Ah, Memories of Deutschland!

I can remember chasing them away from the Kaserne areas in Frankfurt, then seeing them shopping in our PX. Those huge saucer hats of theirs were goofy looking.

It was pretty much standard practice for them to tail our convoys and armor unit delployments when I was stationed in Bremen in '79.

If I recall correctly, they had to be in marked vehicles and stay a certain distance from our vehicles at all times, something like 100 yards or something like that.
