One of my old rifle team Pards was in the Regular Army and was at a firing battery of some type that was on Bainbridge Island. He has a great story from back in the day while stationed there. Essayons, was you Dad a Army Guard Technician by any chance??

there was an elevator that went up and connected with the rail system. they kept the missles and war heads in the below ground magazine. They would raise the elevator, and then by hand push the missles down the rails to the launchers. At least thats the way my father described it to me. He ran the wrecker and "joined" the missles. He was in Gibstown NJ, Ft. Bliss, and served for a year on the DMZ in Korea when that U.S. spy ship got taken over by the N. Koreans.

Yes, now I remember. There was an "on deck" control light at the operators panel. I was trained as a BCO at US AD School Ft Bliss and I have had only a short time in the bunker.

The elevator arrangement was common for the units in the lower 48. The Alaskan sites were above ground. Here's a couple of photos to give a better idea:

Herc's were stored underground in magazines on Okinawa also. Spent a fair amount of time there, in the magazine, megging cables, one of many jobs. It was very hot in the magazine, so what I would do is prop the stairway door open, then open the door to the Launcher Control Operators room, climb the escape ladder and open the escape hatch. This would allow the cooler air, if there was such a thing on Okinawa, to vent the warmer air out of the magazine and create a little breeze for those of us working there.
Regards

I was a 52B30 "On the Hill" and "Down Range" | There are 2 rifle ranges in Wackernheim, an US one and a German one, side by side. 1987 to 1997 I was shooting there 2 times a month. The Nike unit must have been disbanded long before.
