Hot chow

Sometimes when we were in the field, which was about all of the time, we would get hot chow from the rear....we always looked forward to this...one time after quite a long ordeal we got the word we were going to get hot chow! Right on! Being an NCO, we lined up to serve the troops, we started opening the metal cans, and what did we see....liver and onions! Disgusting! I became so angry I wanted to whip the heck out of those darn cooks! We ate it, but we didn't like it....well, maybe a few liked it......I never did like an Army Cook.

I have had similar experiences with Army cooks, (and a few civialian ones too)

Cooks just serve up what the pre planned menu tells them they have to on any given day.

I have pulled mucho KP and though I would not be a"spoon,"
they got a job just like anybody else.

I must be lucky!

Never saw any Liver & onions in my 5 years of service!

Army chow was pretty damn good for us in The 9th Engineer Battalion.

When they served up soul food, a fellow could always order up a couple of burgers. They always "hooked us up" for the Holidays too!

Army Cooks kept me alive for my time in service!

Here's a recent menu from one of the Camp Liberty (Baghdad) dining facilities:

Breakfast:
Steak Sandwiches on Wheat/Baked Bacon/Creamed Beef/Bagel Sandwiches/Pork Sausage Patties/English Muffin Sandwich/Canadian Bacon/Biscuit w/Ham & Eggs/Onion & Mushroom Quiche/Asst. Omelets/ Asst. Eggs/Hash Browns/Grits/Oatmeal/Steam Rice/French Toast/Waffles/Doughnuts/Cinnamon Rolls.

Lunch:

When I was stationed at Fort Wainwright, with the 4/9th Infantry, and then the 6/327th Infantry, we got fed pretty good in Garrison, but when we were in the field, the best we could hope for was Chili Mac....when they fed us that, we knew we were in for a very long march/field exercise.....when I was with the 1/75th, in Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, we shared a mess hall with a leg unit, chow was pretty good there, but it was a rare thing for us to have hot chow when we were away from Garrison.


During the Holidays, I admit, those cooks did a good job.

I'm not a spoon, but I do know they have a fixed menu, for the most part.

In garrison, they get a fair amount of flexibility.

Guards/Reseves, the only flexibility they get ois the ability to switch the lunch and dinner menus on any given day.

That Camp Liberty mess is run by contractors, they get paid a certain price per person they serve. I hear they do well some places, worse others.

What the hecks wrong with you people. I kept waiting on someone else to speak but but they didn't. Liver and Onions is a food for the gods.

I quickly found out that the chow hall in the Bayne Jones Army Community Hospital ("B-Jack" as we called it) at Ft. Polk served the best food on the whole base. I used to drive across the base every evening to dine on their fare. They never did notice that my patch was different than the medical folks.

Glad to see Ft Bragg Messes haven't changed, Daimyo. The chilimac and corn has always been a cheap meal for the boonies.

God you guys are bringing back some memories. I have not heard the term spoon or chilimac in a long time. Two stories for ya. At Ft Jackson my first Army meal after I got off the bus. I was in line not know ing what end was up and the server offered up a steak, it was 4 in the morning. I thought what the heck. I got to the table and although it looked good it was one giant piece of grizzle. As I bit into it for the first time I could hear the servers laughing. I was taken for a ride I guess. They must have been real bored and needed a laugh.
Was on manuvers with the Division playing war games as we always did. I was somewhere in Alabama if memory server me correct. Maybe Jaildog can step in to help here. We were in the sticks for a week and of course what else we were served chili mac. Standing on the chow line I would see soldiers start to eat right after they were served walk away and wind up tossing the coveted hot chow in the trash. I thouhgt for a min are these guys crazy? After getting close I understood why. These little flying critters were covering the cow like you just got done adding a pound of pepper to the meal. To make a long story short that chili mac was the best dam chilimac I ate the entire time I was in critters and all. Man I wish I was still there, does this desire ever go away? Iis been 18 years and I dont go a day without thiking about what if.
