Joined the Iowa Army National Guard Co A 2nd 133rd Mech Infantry Division in January, 1985 at the age of 17 with my parents consent. May 1985 off to Ft. Benning Georgia B-9-2 Harmony Church for basic. In June of 1986 I returned to beautiful Ft. Benning Georgia Harmony Church D-4-2 for advanced training for 11B infantry. December 1998 after 14 years I decided that I had enough of the fun, games and BS and asked to be released from service as an E-5 in the Texas NG. MOS's held 11B, 11H and 19D. Had I not gotten out in 2005 I would have had my 20 years. |

Basic at Ft Dix, NJ in 1972
AIT at Ft Belvoir, VA also 1972, as a 52B (Power Generator Mech)
Went to Germany, 3rd Armored (1/40 FA) 72-74, then across town to 8th Maint Bn 74-75, made E-5 in there, and got transferred to HQ, 3rd SUPCOM 75-77.
Next was Ft Bliss (2/55 ADA) 77-79 and Germany again (3/7 ADA) 79-83. Both I-HAWK.
Got out, went into the VT Army Guard.
I've chewed some of the same turf as some of you, and a few at the same time.

BCT 1973 Ft Dix D-3-3
No AIT. I was sent directly to my first permanent duty station where I was OJT. Earned my MOS and promotion to E-3 after 3 months. C 1/66 2nd AD Ft Hood 11E
AOB 1977 Ft Knox
Lots of other schools and places over the years. An earlier post asked about Patton. I was in A 2/67 2AD during the time Patton was running the division. I was among those on the parade field across from the hospital during his change of command ceremony before he headed to Germany to, according to him, take charge of a bunch of cooks and clerk typists.
I was also in his on-post quarters at Hood for an evening social event. We all thought he was slightly nuts but he loved the men, the NCOs, and the junior officers. But he breathed fire on the battalion and brigade COs.
