Joined the Guard while still in High School, December 56. No Basic Training required in those days. Three years in 168th Inf and 113th Armored Recon. Brown Boot Army with US Rifle, Cal 30 M1.
Active Duty September 59. Basic (finally) 8th Inf, 1st ID, Ft Riley, Kansas. AIT 13th Inf (I think...may have been 16th (50+ years ago, what do you expect?)), 1st ID, Ft. Riley Kansas. Was issued Brown Boots and spent two weeks dying them black).
Then to Jump School at Ft. Bragg while assigned to B Company, 2nd Abn Battle Gr., 501 Infantry. Must have been near the end of there being a jump school at Bragg. Being a student/leg in a line airborne unit was an experience!
January 1961...Off to Germany, 1st Abn Battle Group, 504th Inf, Mainz (Gonsenheim), Germany for two years.
Left Active duty January 63 but joined a USAR Special Forces Group in about May 63......17th Special Forces Group, Hq Co., Sand Point Naval Air Station, Seattle, WA.
Gave up my M1 in about May 61 for a brand spanking new M14 and never carried an M16.
