Kris Kristofferson

Many people may not know about his time in the U.S.Army. He is the son of an Air Force General and a accomplished Golden Gloves boxer. He graduated from Pomona College with a B.S. degree and then became a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University.
He joined the U.S. Army at the prompting of his father. After graduating from Officer Candidate School he attended and graduated from both Army Airborne and Ranger training in the top of each class. He was selected for U. S. Army Special Forces Training but refused so that he could attend pilot training where he earned his wings and became an accomplished U.S. Army helicopter (gun ship) pilot, achieving the rank of Captain.

He was about to be promoted to the rank of Major and appointed to teach at West Point when he resigned his commission from the Army to go into music and acting. You can tell in this video that his time in the military means a lot to him.

Wow,
I knew he was a Rhodes Scholar but did not know he was a veteran. A Ranger at the top of his class and a helicopter pilot. impressive.

Cpt K...

Yes, one of my old rifle team Pards, now a CW4 (Ret.), did his first tour to Viet Nam as a 11Bravo, then his second tour as a WO Pilot. And he knew CPT Kristofferson.

Not sure why????. But "Mac" always said the name CPT Kristofferson!!!!!, with added surly emphasis. I never asked him why, but I’m sure he had some Army Aviation related beef with CPT Kristofferson!!!!!...

He let all of us know that CPT Kristofferson!!!!!, was a Rhodes Scholar also… Certainly some issues that go way back… Next time I talk to Mac, I’ll try and get the low down…

I enjoyed him playing in the movie Heaven's Gate (1980).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080855/

A true story about the Johnson county war in Wyoming in 1891. Base on the book “The Banditti of the Plains” by A.S. Mercer. (I have a first addition copy I picked up in Tucson back in Ought-6). Talk about political corruption!!! And Federal agents being involved!!!!... I highly recommend the book and the movie Heaven’s Gate. CPT K ain’t the best actor portraying James Averill, but he does well enough..

He's better qualified for high office than many of those holding them. At least Kris could get a driver's license in this state based upon the documentation provided to the American people, unlike some others I know of who also couldn't pass the security check required of second lieutenants.

I enjoyed the performance he gave in Pat Garret and Billy the Kid. Dillon was selling copies of it. Not exactly a historically accurate depiction of events, but very entertaining IMO. Sadly, newer versions have suffered some heavy handed editing.

Some alternative reading on KK can be found googling his name and the CIA. Air Force Generals son and Rhodes Scholar make for good "Company" material.

We have a singer here I rated as a whistle buoy, to the contrary of my wife. Until I learned that he was one of the few, who entertained our troops at Mazar-E-Sharif. Good boy.
