IMR 4895 reloading

Hey guys!
Well it has begun, my reloading process. This is for a 18" Crit. barrel. I did some garand rounds and they turned out great so it time to turn to the trusty .308.
I have
LC Brass
CCI "milspec" primers
IMR 4895 powder
150 FMJBT bulletes
168 A-Max bullets

What is your suggestions for loads for these. I am not asking what is YOUR load, but where should I start for these ones. The ones I got for the Garand were from a Horndy service rifle handbook, but .308 is not in there.
Thanks guys!

The old NRA service rifle load data shows max loads in LC cases of 42.0 grains of IMR-4895 with a 150 grain bullet and 40.5 grains of IMR-4895 with a 168 grain bullet (Sierra Match King).

I've been working up IMR4895 loads for my Socom16, so we should be in the same ballpark...

My previous post...

http://m14tfl.com/upload/showthread.php?t=92998

The 147grn FMJ load was very near the final loading, but it was in PNJ brass, IIRC.

The loading with the 168grn bullets was way below starter loads, I felt, so you would probably be better starting with about 39.0grn IMR4895.

Not to get it side-tracked, but my Hornady guide has 308 for Service Rifle in it, which edition do you have? (believe mine is the 8th ed.)

My best load for my M1A is 38.5 of IMR 4895 using 168 gr Nosler Custom Comp bullets. I dont have a chrony, but out of the different loads that I made, this shoots the best.

I have decent luck with 41.5 pushing a 168 Nosler CC in LC Milsurp cases

Winchester Brass
168GR SMK
CCI #34 primers
41gr of IMR4895
2.80 seating depth

5 shots 100 meters - top left is the recipe - btw the flyer is my fault

Was doing a seating depth experiment and its amazing what a difference .005" increments makes inaccuracy in my rifle.

Hornady number 7 and number 8 have 308 service rifle load data. Older Hornady load guides, such as number 6, do not have 308 service rifle but do have 30-06 service rifle load data. Note the Hornady 308 service load data uses Hornady cases which are like Winchester commercial cases.

I had a 20 year old Hornady load guide that showed a max load of 39.5 grains of IMR-4895 with the old Hornady 168 grain BTHP. 39.5 grains is often an accurate load.

My latest numbers with A-Max bullets,

168 A-Max, IMR 4895 41.0 grs, CCI #34 primer, LC '05 brass, 2.800" COL. Gets me; 2468 fps avg, Es=52.48 and Sd=14.31, 10 rd group size 2.094" c-t-c. 65*, 48%, 2000' ASL.

I am finding that I actually do a little better with SMK 168 and H4895.

Good Shooting!

Just remember the C-34 is a magnum primer. My M1A's like 39.5 grns of IMR 4895 and a 168 Sierra to 41 grns max.

I don't have a 147 grn work up.

Just start low and don't be surprised with the C-34 that you get to max with a "light" load.

Cool

In the 80's when I was competing in the 800 aggregate I was using a 1-10 barrel with, if I remember right:
Sierra 168 Match King
Lake City brass
41.5 grains 4895
Federal bench rest primers

That is from memory but am very sure it is correct.
