308 168 gr Winchester SAFE for M1A?

A local SWAT team in the area just switched from 308 to 30-06. I snatched up about 400 rounds of their stock of :

308 WINCHESTER
168GR HOLLOW POINT BOATTAIL
MATCH

I've taken it to the range and my Tikka T3 LOVES IT! 1/2 MOA and some stacked!

My question is, is this non-NATO surplus ammo safe to fire in my M1A? Does anyone have experience in firing consumer grade ammo in their m1a?

Don't want to blow up my favorite rifle-thanks all!

I fire Remington ammo thrugh mine all the time and hunt with Federal Premium Ballistic tips. It seems to like it all. I get better groups with the 165 gr than I do with the 150gr American Eagle.

I called SAI when I first bought it 7 years ago, they said mod ammo is fine. I was worried at first because I had a M1 Garand that could not fire non Mill ammo. Springfield said to go ahead and have fun.

Cool I have no problem

HI DOUG when I hunt here in tennessee we can not use fmj and most of the surplus 7.62 is full metal jacket so I always use winchester or federal 308 starting in fall for sighting in scope, then for deer boar and black bear and coyotes. never had any problem with ammo, but a did have some strange looks from people on wildlife managment area's now I have bolt guns in the 7mm rem. mag size but when I can carry it I use my 308.

I contacted SAI as well regarding the 168gr HPBT ammo. The Rep from the Tech dept said they actually recommend this ammo for the M1A platform to obtain the best accuracy with all barrel lengths. He said as long as it is a good commercial manufacturer and the working chamber pressure is not greater than 50,000 psi, the warranty is not affected. He also said firing any projectiles over 180gr would void the warranty.

A plug here for one of our listed ammo vendors:

M-14 parts (www.m-14parts.com) in Columbus, NC are great folks to deal with. I went to place an on-line order for PRVI Partizan 168gr ammo and came up with a real screwy shipping charge. Called Mandy, who re-worked the order manually and called me back that night at 2130 hrs to square things away. Good people and good prices.

Please, DO NOT FIRE IT!!!

Send it to me, I'll pay shipping

Actually, as has been mentioned, this the best ammo for your rifle. It is essentially the same load as Federal is loading for their M14 specific American Eagle ammo. Have fun with it!

The SWAT team must be upgrading to Garands. The local police snipers here use 30-06 with a factory loaded 125 grain bullet.
