125 Gr. Bullet in a socom 16?

Okay so with the big reloading supply shortage, all I'm able to get a hold of is RE-10 and 125 Gr. bullet. So my question is. Can I safely fire a 125 grain bullet out of my socom? I do want to keep the load light since RE-10 is good for like .223 and 22-250. But alliant does advise that a .308 in 125 gr. is another good choice for this powder. Thanks Gents.

The 125 gr out of Socom is a no problem. Use them here for short line XTC match. RE 10 have no idea on its burn rate. If too fast it could hurt the gas system with out after market, gas plug. If you can find some of the 4895 family or 3031, RE 15 or Varget. All will work. Good luck and good shooting.

Thank you sir,
Well according to Alliant, they have a .308 load with RE-10x with a 125gr. bullet. I want to try this out because its all that I can find. I'm all out of RE-15 and IMR 4895. Thanks again for your imput!!

Assuming you are concerned with the lightness of the bullet, I can assure you that the even lighter 110 grain bullets work well in my SOCOM 16. I use commercial Hornady TAP 110 grain ammo and find it is a very nice match to the rifle. It targets well on the short ranges expected for a CQB rifle, has low recoil and very little flash. Others have posted similar satisfaction with the performance in their SOCOM's. Wish I could advise reload data, but I don't do that - just use various factory and surplus stuff.

Best regards - - - Smokey

I have done some Mexican Match with the Speer 130grain HP bullet. I pull the 147grainers out of the German Dag military stuff, resize the neck and then simply install the Speer 130gr projectile withOUT touching the powder charge. They clock at about 2750fps to 2800fps on the chrony out my SM M1A. The bullet is seated down to the bottom of the neck/top of the shoulder----can't remember OAL, but Hodgon has it on their reloading data website.

You can load the Speer 130grain HP bullets to a much higher velocity than 2750-2800fps it you want to work up your own hand loads. The Mexican Match stuff is just real simple, quick and easy. Have fun.

My recommendation is to start out at about 39.5gr of powder and don't go any higher than about 41.5gr. That should put your velocities in a range of about 2680fps - 2800fps and the pressures should stay under 54,000 psi max. The top end is starting to push the port pressure up a little higher than I would like even though you could probably increase the power charge weight up to about 42gr without creating too dangerously high pressures.

I was shooting the 125 at MV's down in the 2450fps range for a long time using IMR4895 (same charge I would use with the 168) and they shot true and functioned fine. Great 200yd load; very mild recoil.
