RL-15 for 69 SMK

After consulting Sierra's guide and Alliant's website for a proper charge, I went with 25.3 grns of RL-15 and set it at 2.260". Using once fired BHA match brass and 7 1/2 SRP. While seating the bullet, I felt and heard the powder compress. A little "crunch". I've used 25.0 grns RL-15 with the 69, but just don't recall the powder being compressed. I am going to load some 80 grn AMAX also with the RL-15. Any thoughts from members on these issues? Or am I over thinking it? Thanks.

Try this:

Instead of dumping the powder straight into the case, pour it slowly and a little off to the side in your powder funnel. What you want to see is the powder swirling down into the case, like water going down a sink drain. This makes it pack in more tightly inside the case and can make a surprising difference in the amount of room left for the base of the bullet...

Update on Loads

OK, the swirl method helps the powder settle in nice and easy. Feels much better. Moving on to the 80 grn. AMAX, this bullet is loong! Manuals say 2.550" and this will reach well into my chamber and the rifling. Suggestions on OAL for this pill/combo? Thanks again.

I use 24.8 grains of RL-15 with the 69 grain smk and I can't hear the powder shake when they're loaded. I notice that the powder level is almost up in the case neck.

What kind of accuracy are you getting with 25.3. I stopped at 24.8 and it'll shoot better than I can hold.

I tried that 80gr amax in a tikka, 1-8 twist. Mag length just wasn't going to happen. I set it just off the lands and single loaded. Key holed on my first load, and I gave up since that rifle is a pita to single load anyway. I think it would be happier in a 1-7 twist barrel.
