Best Ammo?

I'm reading reviews online say that American Eagle .308 150grn Boat tail is a good grouping round at 100 yards.

That surprises me because its not match ammo and its a lot cheaper then the normal $24-$30 a box for Match .308

Anyone prefer a certain ammo for 100 yard shooting?

I haven't tried more then 2 brands out so far and don't want to spend another $100 for 60 rounds on a brand that might not work.

A lot will depend on what rifle your using.My Socom lovers 125- 130gr and that what its most accurate with.My SANM likes the heavier weights 155-168gr. I can give you a link to a exellent ammo manufacture.His ammo is exellent for accuracy and getting all you can get out of a caliber.I have been using his stuff for quit some time.Its VERY accurate and I never had a failure of any type with it.Also his prices are fair,especially for what you receive.I use his pistol & rifle ammo.Zero complaints.

No,I have no vested interest in his products.

Just what do they consider good groups?

I'm looking for 0.5 - 1.5 MOA at 100 yards.

Being that I'm LEO, I'm concerned mainly with repeatable accuracy within 100 yards from my M1A rifle which is primarily being used as a marksmen rifle.

Current setup is :

Springfield MA9827 - 22inch Loaded with cluster rail, Arms #22M rings, Leupold 3.5-10x50 VX-III scope and the JAE-100 stock should be arriving soon. Also as per Bill I'll be ordering the Sadlak Guide rod and Gas piston.

Research, still the best game in town......

First of all, each rifle is a little different Veltrox, on what kind of candy they just love best. Here is a little work up on different military surplus ammunition that I have sent down range through my NM Springfield. Enjoy, oh by the way military surplus ammunition is a lot cheaper than $100 for 60 rounds ( $1.67 cents each...).

* M118LR Lake City surplus ammo from 2003 (LC-XM118LR PD). The first string was a 188-9X, 2nd group a 200-13X at 100Yd.

* M118 Lake City surplus ammo from 1985 (LC-85E135-016). The first string was a 194-9X, 2nd group a 199-12X at 100Yd.

* Portuguese m/963 surplus ammo from 1979 (lot BF 79-70). The first string was a 195-5X, 2nd group a 199-10X at 100Yd.

* M852 Lake City surplus ammo from 1985 (LC-85B183-008). First string was a 194-9X, 2nd group a 198-13X.

* Radway Green surplus ammo from 1985 (Lot A4/1818 16.9.85). The first string was a 198-8X, 2nd group a 198-9X at 100Yd.

* Santa Barbra surplus ammo from 1980. The first string was a 186-5X, 2nd group at a little better with a 197-14X at 100Yd.

* Argentine surplus ammo from 1983 (Lot 06 03-5). The first string was a 193-5X, 2nd group at a little better with a 197-8X at 100Yd.

* Greek surplus ammo from 1980 (Lot 21-80). The first string was a 195-8X, 2nd group a 197-6X at 100Yd.

* German DM 41, military surplus ammo from 1960 using (lot MS 134-60). The first string was a 193-5X, 2nd grouping a 197-6X.

* Australian ADI surplus ammo from 1988 (lot AFF 24-8-88), The first string was a 194-5X, 2nd group a 196-8X at 100Yd.

* Radway Green surplus ammo from 1990 (Lot L2A2 12.04.90). The first string was a 180-6X, 2nd group a 195-9X at 100Yd.

* South African surplus ammo from 1980 R1M1(lot 205WA 11/80), The first string was a 193-3X, 2nd group a 195-5X at 100Yd.

* Malaysian surplus ammo from 1983 (Lot 10-83) delinked. The first string was a 189-4X, 2nd group a 194-9X at 100Yd.

* Venezuelan surplus ammo from 1989 HS nny (lot PPU 8909 ), The first string was a 192-9X, 2nd group a 194-2X at 100Yd.**

* Portuguese m/963 surplus ammo from 1978 (lot FNM78-23). The first string was a 186-4X, 2nd group a 190-4X at 100Yd.

* Hirtenberger surplus ammo from 1978 HS HP. The first string was a 188-5X, 2nd group a 190-3X at 100Yd.

* Belgium surplus ammo from 1977 (lot 12 FNB 77). The first string was a 188-4X, 2nd group a 189-7X at 100Yd.

* South African surplus ammo from 1981 R1M1(lot B07/81), The first string was a 179-5X, 2nd group a 189-1X at 100Yd.

* Indonesian surplus ammo from 1985 (lot 1/85), The first string was a 186-1X, 2nd group a 187-1X at 100Yd.

* Pakistan military surplus ammo from 1980 using (lot WT 12/80). Headstamp POF 80 L2A2. My best score was only a 180-0X.

All targets are NRA SR-1, 20 rounds per target, max score is 200. You pick the one that would like the most and buy some for your rifle to test out on. Good Luck Veltrox,

American Eagle is OK for general practice, but not for the JFK shot. For repeatable accuracy and your desired 100yd or less range you may want to consider tactical grade ammo over standard ball or milsurp - of course you have to do your part regardless

I would look at Federal LE Tactical HP, Hornady TAP FPD or Hornady LE TAP Urban - these seem specific to your trade. I would choose lighter grain bullets, like 110gr, for less penetration especially at sub 100yd and 165gr+ HPs when collateral damage is not a concern or 'one shot stopping' is required Expect to pay about $1 per round

Wander over to snipercentral.com, some good info there too
