Max FPS?

Can someone give a quick rundown of max fps for bullet weights so I don't buy anything too hot. Something like.....

xxxgr max is xxxxfps
xxxgr max is xxxxfps
And so on in the most common weights.

I was going to buy some 145gr Prvi but in a review of it a guy said he was getting 2859fps out of it which was hot, so I just want some good clarification as to the limits so I don't screw anything up.

Sorry my search function started screwing up here so I can't easily search for things.

This is difficult to answer, your rifle has a 22 inch barrel while the test rifle used to get that data had a longer barrel. This is why I stick to well known surplus ammo or FGMM. That way you know you are okay. And then you throw in the aftermarket gas plug that is adjustable and the pressures change again. Pressure is the demon here not speed.

Prvi steps right out, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. My chrono tests with it and a number of other genuine surplus and modern factory loadings put it right there with all of it. I would (and do!) use Prvi, it's at least 70% of my factory loaded stash.

Does the adjustable plug make it "safer" because it's bleeding off excess pressure? I'm not reloading yet so the pressure stuff is a little over my head.

Just stay away from light magnum hunting stuff. 168 & 175 grain Federal Gold Medal Match is safe to shoot and runs in the neighborhood of 2600 FPS for both. The 175 stuff actually runs around 2630 FPS out of a conventional 4-groove 22" barrel.

147, 149 & 150 grain FMJ (XM80-type) type factory ammo runs around 2750 to 2800 FPS.

If you hand-load start out with IMR-3031, IMR-4895, H4895 & IMR-4064 powders.

A vented gas piston or gas plug will help reduce the stress on the operating rod when running the 175 grain or 180 grain bullets (depending on how hot you load them).

Tony.

2859 is only hot if those numbers mean she is 28 years old and 5'-9" tall.

IMHO, Tony is spot on but I would have also included/lumped the 155 class bullets with the M80 spec's.
