Bang and lots of smoke

I was at the range a couple of weeks ago and after shooting some PPU 7.62 ammo I went to my hand loads. The first several rounds seemed to be a little light but they went down range and cycled the action. Loaded another mag and when I pulled the trigger the rifle sent the round down range but the chamber and mag were full of smoke. I checked everything and no problems with the rifle. I also checked some of the fired cases and the primers looked to be backed out a little bit. I think that maybe the loads were too light. I was shooting 147 grain bullets in LC brass with 40 grains of 4064. When I hand load I use a powder measure to throw the powder and usually weigh every 5th charge.

Am I on the right track? I will probably pull the bullets on the remaining rounds from that reloading session and re-weigh the powder charge.

Yes, too light.

4064 isn't the best choice for a light bullet, but you should be up around 43-44 grains.

I've gone as light as 41.3 gr 4064 with a 147 gr FMJ with no issues noted. Reliable function.

Right now I'm experimenting with H4895.

40 grains is a very light load for a 147 grain FMJ. Hodgdon's starting load is 42.9 grains for 4064. You're maybe getting 2400-2500fps. That's .30-40 Krag, .300 Savage ballistics and pressure. Bet the cases were pretty dirty, too,
