Easier on the rifle regardless of what ammo you shoot.

These must be some fragile rifles. Good thing they never went to war

must be, maybe that is why try as they may, the US Military just can't seem to get rid of these "fragile and obsolete" rifles....

villanovaswo,

I chrono'ed FGMM 175's out of a 26" Krieger in an .308AR and got 2658 FPS, e.s of 21 and s.d of 8. I believe out of a 22" barrel you velocity would be about 2600, maybe a bit less. Also checked M852 and got 2700+. Just now checked some of my data and found that 43gr./4064 with a 175 in my M1A was 2576FPS and the same load in my .308AR was 2690FPS, right about what they say 4" of barrel length should be for velocity difference.

Thanks from Rich D

There have been tens of millions of rounds of FGMM fired through the M14/M1A platform over the past 30+ years without issue. Use with confidence.

Awards Showcase

FGMM 168 and 175, along with the American Eagle 168 OTM, all currently use 43 grains of 4064.

While safe for the M14 (Federal developed the Mk 316 Mod 0 around it), it is at what I consider the upper limit. I use a Schuster vented and overbored plug with all such full power ammo, just to keep from battering the oprod (on both ends).

The 168's leave my USGI barrels at just over 2650, while the 175's will break the magical 2600 mark.

I do not use older FGMM, simply because I do not know what the powder is.

Thanks from Rich D

As Lysander noted, Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain ammo is pretty much a clone of M852 ammo which was made to use in both gas guns and bolt guns.

Aaron, you know that these rifles are made of marshmallows like our M1's. We should exercise caution when using such ammo - especially the standard well-regarded match ammo like FGMM.
Mike B
PS: joshing aside... if your rifle doesn't shoot well with FGMM there is something wrong with your rifle, not the ammo.

For the past 9 or 10 years, I have found the 168gr Federal Gold Metal Match to be excellent ammo in my M1A/M21 Tactical Match. In fact, its the "standard" that I compare my handloads to:

...so I respectfully suggest you buy a box of 168gr GMM, and carefully shoot it off the bench - whatever size group you get - that is most likely IMO, darn near, the accuracy potential of your particular M1A...
