German Surplus 308 wont feed

Hello,

I just bought my first M1A. Carried one in Iraq back in 05-06, loved that one. I bought a scout model with a walnut stock. Took it to the range and immediately started having problems. I diagnosed the problem as a magazine issue because i was using the Mags I brought home from Iraq 12 years ago. Of course I did not bring the new mag to range with me, why would I do that? So I promptly jumped on here and researched good mags. Ordered 4 CMI mags in short order and received them today. Loaded one up and Viola... same darn problem. Also tested the little 10 rounder to no avail. Then the brain says "try different ammo" well there it is. No feeding issues. steel cased cycled fine out of new mags. Greek surplus cycled fine out of new mags. Retested German surplus, and every other round jumped out of the magazine and ends up half way out of the chamber at a 45 degree angle with the bolt trying to push it into the chamber. This only happens with the rounds feeding from the left, and when there is more than ten rounds in the magazine. Once the mag is half empty the rounds will "clunk" into the chamber. So this leads me to the following questions...
1) Has any one ever experienced this?
2) Could the German ammo be out of spec?
3) Any other process of elimination procedures I need to execute?

The German surplus cycles fine in my G2 Recon. Could it just be a little out of whack enough to mess up the cycling process in an M1A?

Thanks.

Almost sounds like you got some light loaded ammo and it is short cycling but when some of tne pressure is taken off magazine spring your rifle is trying to feed.I would get rid of it or shoot it in a bolt gun or something.but I'm new myself so wait for some heavy hitters to weigh in ,welcome to the forum ,Thank you for you're service

Please, . . . that is an answer all of us surplus ammo users would like to know.

I sure wouldn't want to wind up with a tub of it.

May God bless,
Dwight

I have a lot of 308 so I think its the Hirtenburger surplus. The rounds are silver and the brass is , well, brass. I have cycled the action through both firing the rifle and manually. Same result. ; Round feeding from the left side of magazine jumps out of mag into a 45 degree slant stopping the bolt behind it. Again, my greek surpluss ammo does not do this. nor does Tula.

Question

Would you give us all a picture of the headstamp surplus ammunition in question or write it all down for us here. German (DAG or MEN) covers a whole lot of years just in 7.62x51mm politici ad mortem. Commercial Germen 308 ammunition is not military surplus ammunition.

Thanks

It sounds like the cases are undersized. Not all 7.62x51 will function properly in an M14. It probably feeds fine out of an Stg58 or G3.

Thats what I was looking for. So you have had feeding issues due to ammoo then? If so that will put this to bed for me.

Any chance you are talking about DAG? Works in my SA M1A Loaded, but I only have SA mags. Mags and the M1A get to be a pain.

Springfield mags are the same thing as CMI mags just a different stamp. I'm interested to see which ammo this is.
