Field and Stream ammo for M1A

Hi all
Just bought my first M1A. I got the Socom 16 by Springfield, can't wait to shoot it but before I do I have a question. I've seen a lot of mixed information on the internet about what ammo is safe to shoot. The manual also says to preferably use NATO rounds and the tag on the gun shows it's headspace to 1.631. I sold my 308 before I bought this and I have a box of 100 .308 rounds at 168 grain FMJ. Now the manual says to use either milspec or high end commercial grade ammo but I'm a bit weary of using this ammo. It's also box primed. I obviously don't want to have any slam fire issues or even wear the gun out by shooting this whole box, but what do you guys think? You can't return ammo in NY so I'd have to give it to my brother and I know American eagle makes M1A specific 7.62x51 ammo I just wanted to hear your opinions first. Thanks a lot!

My SOCOM likes everything I feed it. I think they caution against rounds like Hornady Superperformance with the extra pressure in the Socom but you should be fine with the F&S

That's the ammo if anyone was wondering although it's not 143 grain but 168.

Looking at the specs, I would think 2559fps should be within pressure limits. I believe you can also shoot it single shot, with the gas system disabled.

Actually the FPS are 2799 according to the box. Is this a problem?

From the chart, 163 grains@2799 looks marginal. I'd wait for others more knowledgeable to chime in.

Get a ported gas plug and then you can shoot loads like these and not worry about it.

I am not an expert but this is what I would do if I were you and knew what I know now .i would watch all of toneyben3 videos several times take my gun completely apart clean it and lube and put it back together ,you have an excellent weapon why not urge and get some excellent match ammo just for your first say 100 rounds .youre not going to hurt it with factory 168 grn ammo but heck order yourself some federal gold match or my favorite Creedmore Sprorts 175 grain match ,cheap no good yes.

Welcome and this is the place to learn about the M1A. The most confusing detail is difference between 308 and 7.62X51.

For most part there is very little difference between the 2 if you avoid the high performance 308s (high velocity hunting bullets). You should stay in the 2600 fps range for 168/175s (avoid heavier than the 175.178s but that does not mean never [you may need special changes like ported gas plug, grooved piston, etc]). Virtually all the ammo we shoot is boxer primed or load, only a few (very few) mess with Berdan primers. Some of the older NATO ammo was Berdan primed.

Main difference for 308 and 7.62 is the extreme ends of spec for headspace and for the M1A the limits of pressure at the port, thus avoid really high speed ammo or very fast or very slow powders. There are no 7.62 dies, you use 308 dies and the brass is essentially 308 brass except NATO/LC brass is generally thicker and may have a bit less volume.

This may be too general and the experts will gladly fine tune my comments.

Thanks for the knowledgeable replies all. I don't want to mess with anything on the rifle itself so I'll just give the box to my brother who has my .308 savage hog hunter I sold him. I'll just have him give me money for the rounds at a discount. I think I'll opt for the American Eagle M1A 7.62x51 ammo.

I'd rather pay for better rounds to preserve the firearm in the long run.

That ammo was made for your rifle. Surplus NATO ammo is perfectly safe to shoot also. Good luck post some pics if you have time.

You mean the American eagle ammo? That's what I intend to buy. 2650fps at 168 grains.

Yep, it has a little picture of you rifle on the box, and it says M1A on the box. It is basically the same thing as federal gold metal match. Very accurate ammo in my rifle.

I always check SGammo.com first, and also ammoseek.com. SG usually has competitive prices, and they are very reasonable on shipping. The Hirt and Men are GTG in your rifle, too.
