This is a discussion on TZ 5.56 question --good, bad, so-so??? within the Ammunition forums, part of the M14 M1A Forum category; Anybody here have any experience with or info on TZ head stamped 5.56 ammo??? I found a small amount with the lot # 203-81.
Someone asked a question about IMI M855 ammo quality on another board. Some misrepresented IMI M855 was on the market recently. I had forgotten to put up a warning about it here, so I cut & pasted my reply.
I purchased cases of IMI M855 in late '04 when it went on sale for 175/K. It is packaged in 1200rd cases, 30 rd boxes with IMI logo on each, & is head stamped IMI 02 with NATO +. It is very high quality ammo. No problems observed or heard of involving factory new IMI M855.
WARNING:There was some IMI M855 ammo that had been fielded, repackaged, then sold off as surplus. That stuff was not first quality factory IMI M855. It showed definite signs of being subjected to moisture and abuse from fielding. It was not repackaged in the factory IMI 30 rd. boxes with the IMI logo. This fielded ammo was repackaged in a generic, but extremely similar, brown 30rd. boxes W/O IMI name or logo. Some "Hump Artist" (Bill Ricca's politically correct school-of-charm speak for a thief!) sold this fielded, generically repackaged ammo w/o disclosing the history behind the ammo. The box will have a white Hansen Cartridge Co. sticker on the back. The gouge to getting new, original IMI M855 is look for the IMI name & logo on each and every box. But if you have any doubts about what you are buying, open up a box and take a look at the ammo itself. Factory new IMI M855 ammo is produced under extremely high quality control standards demanding very few defects of any kind. The IMI M855 in 30rd boxes does not come from the factory on strippers. Lastly, IMI ammo head stamped IMI was produced for commercial sales. IMI ammo head stamped TZ was produced for military use.
Edit: I went back & found a pic of the Hansen imported, repackaged IMI M855 ammo. IIRC, it had a TZ '95 head stamp. This box was purchased in Gonzales, Louisiana.
Here is a new factory box of IMI M855 head stamped IMI 02 +.
