My New Springfield M1A Headspace

As a long time M1 Garand and M14 enthusiast, I just bought my first M1A. It is a present to myself for my up and coming 60th birthday. (I am 52) just kidding.
Going through the paperwork from Springfield regarding my Loaded synthetic stock rifle, I read this information.
Ser#_____, date technician JS, This rifle has been headspaced to 1.631 according to GI specifications. this headspace requires the use of GI mil spec ammunition or good commercially manufactured ammunition that meets GI specs.
With that said, what did your spec sheet say? What is the headspace range produced and shipped by Springfield?.
I am so excited.

Awards Showcase

They are usually 1.631 or 1.632 with commercial barrels. They can be a bit longer with USGI barrels.

I bought my bang stick as a used SAI loaded, there was no H/S tag with the rifle. When it was checked on PTG gages mine was tight at 1.630

M1A head space.

It is important to know the HS of your M1A, it is more important to have a quality, RCBS makes an excellent one, cartridge case HS guage. Art

If memory serves me correctly. Standard 2001 build, USGI barrel (TRW '64).

I know the headspace tag said 1.634".

First off, the chamber HS doesn't make much (any?) difference in the accuracy of the rifle. Having 'tight' or minimum HS can result in function problem with some ammo (usually foreign military or handloads).

I think it's the current 'fashion' of buyers to want HS of 1.630 - 1.632 because they believe that it gives a more precise 'fit'.
Well ... it's sort of like shoes - a pair that feels good with thin dress socks might be unwearable with heavy winter socks.

If you reload, it's important to always use a full-length resize die (maybe smallbase). You can buy and use all the gages and measuring devices you want - but the IMPORTANT thing is that YOUR resized cases are an easy fit into YOUR rifle. If the cases don't fit your rifle then something needs to be adjusted or fixed.
If the bolt doesn't rotate fully closed and locked on a case - that's BAD.

A head space up to 1.638 can be used before Nato no go gauge. I have a rifle with 1.636 that shoots great. The head space has more to do with brass life in civilian rifles who reload, if used in different rifles. One rifle has tight head space and one long. You have to size to the smaller chamber or keep the ammo separate. Not ideal.

I will also ad that NATO ammo manufactured over seas can run on the longer side of spec and cause problems in a tight chambered rifle.
