Early 7.62 x 51 headstamps

I was wondering how early Federal made the 7.62 x 51 round. I was going through some brass I inherited and found one marked F C 5 4. I figure it is within a couple of years of the first ones but haven't seen any that are earlier.

Are you sure that you have an FC 54 case? The earliest that I have seen is FC 59 on a Ball cartridge.

The US adopted the 7.62mm NATO cartridge in late 1954 and the earliest U.S. case with that headstamp is 1955. Anything before that is pre-NATO Cal .30 Light Rifle. The only headstamps I'm aware of with 1954 (and earlier) dates are FA, LC, and WCC.

In the U.S., the cartridge is the 7.62MM NATO. Only the European countries use the 7.62 x 51 designation. In the UK it is simply the 7.62MM.

My apologies as my notes were incorrect. I went and found the case and it is indeed L C 5 4. I should have double checked before posting.

The earliest dated headstamps on the U.S. 7.62MM NATO cartridges, that I'm aware of are:

FA 55
LC 55
WCC 56
WRA 56
RA 58
FC 59
TW 65

The earliest known date on any 7.62 x 51 cartridge is FN 54

The earliest known date on any 7.62mm cartridge is RG 54

Belgium was the first to use the NATO (+) in 1954. The U.S., Canada, and France used it in 1955 but the UK did not use it until 1957.

Thanks from bustabuddy
