However, some folks just have to monkey with stuff.

Reviving my old thread.
I found out what what done to these mags. They were modified for the Mark Wahlberg movie The Lone Survivor filmed in New Mexico. I was talking with a buddie who worked on the movie and he told me they modified about 100 mags for blanks.
Just passing it on.

E

This was my first thought. We modified BAR mags in a similar way for WW2 reenacting.
Can't remember but I think they were modified in the rear of the mag, not the front.

In CMP matches, 2 rounds are still the rule on rapid fire loading...

As mentioned the 2 rounds for rapid fire first, must change magazine rule with 8 rounds to get your 10 shots. I never could get skilled at it, but setting up spotting scope/angled lens version in such a position that you merely glance through it to see your hits while changing mags from 2 to 8 is a time saver and affords you the ability to spot if your sights need adjusted or slight shift in position brings the remaining 8 shots where you want them to go. Old time shooter, well experienced at the game if you will, would do his mag change with a quick glance at his scope and the whole exercise was as smooth as could be, no fumbling around or lost motion. Don't recall him ever "saving any rounds" or running out of time for the rapid stages. Do recall him using a modified mag for the slow fire/prone and he had taken a 20rnd. mag and filled it with lead to further what he called "stabilize" the rifle in that stage, but could still single load the rifle. I don't know if that is "legal" or not, but no one could tell what he had done unless inspecting the mag and he let me try it a few times and no question about it once in your prone position the rifle was not going to move around much.
