Ammo Prices Going Up...Again?

I couldn't find a good existing thread to add this on top of...

I was in my Local Gun Store this morning...(Saturday, 3-30-13)

My buddy there...not a guy given to panic or exageration, etc...said:

'Ammo Prices are going up 20+ on MONDAY!'

This is a 5-store small chain in Wyoming, but they do a large-volume business here.
Their Ammo Distributors just notified them like---
20 + % Increases on Ammo Prices as of 4-1-13.
(No April Fool's Joke!)
There it is...
Across The Board...not just a Caliber or Two.
All Calibers.
Most Re-Loading Components Too.

Obviously all firearm cartridges have various amounts of Brass, Lead, Powder, some with Copper, some not...
That's the only 'objective' justification from an 'Economics 101' view-point I can see...
If there is High Demand, and Low Supply...Prices Rise.

I'm posting this solely as a 'Heads Up! if anybody here is thinking....
Maybe NEXT WEEKEND...I will go looking for some Ammo?

Over the last year or so, I bought ammo in various calibers, and just squirreled it away. Seems like I always got poo-pooed by shooter friends, who would comment on why it wasn't necessary to do so.

Feels so good now, to hear one of those same people say "damn....bought a new .22 and can't even shoot it". I like to come back with "yeah, wish I had some .22 ammo". The pissed off look on their face is priceless.

they're raising prices where they can so that they can either stay in business because of what they forcast it will take to stay in business or they are taking advantage of the demand caused by many factors outside of their control and something you wish not to discuss....politics, whether it be local, national or international. My advice is to dollar cost average...buy enough whenever.. until you feel comfortable with what you have. my $.02

Well wouldn't surprise me either way. May just be for his chain, may be nationwide
Either way, when you have so much demand prices are going to go up, especially when you've been burning through alot of raw materials.

I am an FFL. My suppliers are D-R-Y and the MNFs are on record as 6-8 months behind and filling back orders.

Pistols are HARD to come by, large dealers and retailers are taking the top, while rifles are a little easier to find, but not until the Distributors sales reps are done duking it out over their individual customer's needs.

For instance:

I needed a Mossberg Silver Reserve 20 GA shotgun and a Marlin 336 30-30 immediately. My sales rep had to give up some of his inventory to swap those items with another sales rep to help me out. Mind you, this was after a major delivery and all of the previously allocated inventory was divided.

Prices HAVE increased about 10% since last November across the board on firearms. Ammunition is still in short supply and will probably continue until summer when the backlog gets fulfilled. THEN we'll see what happens to the price.

I have heard nothing in regard to this 20% price increase on the 1st, but then again, I do not have 5 stores.

Costs are rising for the producers, it cost money to add extra production shifts , train more employees etc. there is overhead to all of that. So no it does not surprise me the manufacturers have to tack that on at the retail end.

Those are variable costs, not fixed costs, and they are recovered through the increased production. Such costs do not drive up the price of product.

One of the reasons I have been posting some what good prices for .45 ball (what I shoot mostly) and any Winchester Ranger HP that comes at a good price (harharhar).

If you can keep searching, the better than most prices will show up on occasion, while waiting for reloading supplies to pop up also.

Helps to maintain the bunker supply in tough times...food or... lol!!

Getting an Oil change at the (dreaded to some of you) Local Walmart i walked into AMMO!
The only allow 3 boxes per day per customer but i got federal 9MM for $12.00 a box and they had 100 round boxes of 5.56 for $38.00 a box. Oc course what ever comes in gest sole in the 1st hour but the prices seem ok for Brass cased Ammo. The have a bunch of TulAmmo but I only shoot steel in my Mini-30.

If I had a retail business I think I'd be looking for a new ammo wholesaler/distributor.

I'll be sure to pass that along to them...

And maybe at the same time they can look for a distributor with large stocks of ammo, too...
