| Hirtenberger ??
I am planning on selling some ammo I have, kind of cleaning out the closet, so to speak.
To get an idea of what the ammo is worth, I checked out the ammo price sticky above.
I have 1000rds of Hirtenberger in the battle packs, and just over 120rds I put on stripper clips in bandoleers. According to the sticky, I have $1200 worth of ammo there. Is anybody buying Hirtenberger, especially at that price?
I got 3 battle packs of South African, which would be worth $240.
Anybody getting that?
And I got so ho-hum Portugese, 240rds.
The Hirtenberger was/is great ammo, but is it that great?
Anybody want it? I don't have to have that much for it, but I don't want to give it away.

The Hirtenberger and the Lithuanian are some of the most sought after surplus.. IT is worth what someone will pay for it.. I personally refuse to pay anywhere close to a dollar a round for surplus when I can shoot Gold Medal Match for around .90 cents a round.. OF course the surplus brass is often better to hand load than the Federal Brass is so that is a bonus for the reloaders out there...

I agree, $1+ a round is a bit steep for surplus.
I'm going to sell it, and I don't want to get hurt, nor do I want to hurt the buyer.
I can sell it for less than that by a fair amount, and not have a loss.

I cannot see ANYONE paying 1200 hundred bucks for a thousand rounds of ANY ammo, except maybe the finest, most perfect, match ammo made.

Unless I'm badly out of touch, I believe most decent milsurp 7.62 is going for .50-.60 a round, depending on the local market. I haven't been buying any for the past few years since I'm overseas, but I keep an eye on prices just the same.

At $1 per round you can get Winchester, Federal or Remington and not have to buy in 1000 round lots.
PS the 2 sites I saw that had Hirtenberger are always overpriced. The DAG/MEN battlepacks for $240 on the site usually go for $85 everywhere else.

I've got some M118LR also, but in the brown USGI boxes.
About 200rds, but I'm keeping that.

Just to give some current pricing perspective, in the past month I have purchased 680 rounds of Hirtenberger 7.62mm NATO.
2 1/2 battle packs @ $80 each from another gun related forum, and 9 boxes for $80 from a private seller.
As for the SA - there is a guy selling a bunch of it on another forum for $65 per battle pack, buyer pays shipping.
The Port tends to go for $0.35 - $0.39 per round at online retailers, in some cases with free shipping.
All of these prices are from the past 90 days, as I've been actively seeking out good batches of surplus to feed my hungry rifle.
Now, when it comes to what you should sell your ammo for - whatever you can get for it is what the market values it at! :)

Hirtenberger shot well out of my rifles. I bought some from AIM a year or so ago for $75 a can of 200 linked. Bought five cans. About half the rounds I shot were boxer primed. I think you need to lower your expectation on what you'll get for the ammo.

Hirtenberger makes some accurate ammo, for sure. The boxer Hirt cases have small flash holes so you have to use a small decapping pin..like a pin for .223, when reloading that brass. A large pin will go thru and de-prime the case, but the pin gets stuck in the flash hole coming back out.
The Berdan primed Hirt brass will have to be deprimed with a Berdan decapping tool...a slow process, but I have done it and the Hirtenberger Berdan brass is very uniform for reloading if you don't mind the effort. I would buy all the Hirt I could find @ 50 cents or less...perhaps less for the Berdan.
My experience has been with Hirtenberger 7.62 (Berdan 1973) and 7.62 (Boxer 1990).

Just got back from the gun show. Hirtenberger was for sale at $95/200, linked (tracers stripped out) in a 30cal can. 1980s vintage. I couldn't tell if it was Berdan or Boxer, so I passed on it for some PPU at $85/200. Portuguese was $90/200 and SA was at $70/140.
