| O M magazines ?
A local gun shop has three M14 magazines. Two are in aluminum wrappers. Opened one and it is stamped OM. One is in what looks like a transparent wax paper. Through the wax paper I can see a light brown or tan grease. This one I didn't open.
How can I tell if the two that are marked OM are good mags?? Anyone have a photo, or two?
Going by the stamp,KMT, this one I got there for $20. When I compared it to one I have at home, I may have wasted twenty dollars. Different orientation of the KTM stamp.
Anyways, here's what it looks like.

This is the stamp Im using to compare.

Thanks for any opinions.

Don't worry about the orientation of the KMT stamp their known to be different on different runs. IMHO these welds look good. You might want to post pics of any printing on the packages.

I think your good to go on the KMT. The welds look right and it has six dimples. Some of my KMT are stamped sideways and also have a line between the bottom two dimples on the latch plate.
On the OM mags they should have a weld pattern like the KMT. 12 welds below the hole and one to the right of it. The latch plate on the OM mag should have five dimples. That would be four dimples at all four corners and the fifth dimple centered between and slightly above the bottom two. The mag in the waxpaper is most likely a T57(?) mag from Taiwan.
What do you mean by aluminum wrappers? Hope this helps.
I added some OM mag photos I took real quick for you. Hopefully you can see what I mean and the minute differences that can be had between mags made by the same company.

The KMT mag was not wrapped. Just lying loose in the display case with the others. Plus two 30 rounders. I didn't get a look at the OM mag wrapper printing. He unwrapped it and handed the mag to me. But the wrapper looked to be some type of aluminum. I should also say that the wrapper is not a bag. Just folded nice and tight around the mag.The mag has little white specks/?? on it. Kinda like tiny rust spots, raised up, but white not rusty brown. Tomorrow I will go back and take a better look, and clean one up. He also want's $20 each for the OM mags., and the one in waxed paper.
If the OM appears as Quicksilvergoat explained, I will get them and post pictures. Glad to hear the KMT is good to go.
Thanks
Cliff

I'm at a loss on the wrapping you are describing. I would definitely buy the OM mags if they check out. To my knowledge OM mags are not commonly counterfeited. Make sure tkae pics of the wrap as well. If it was me I'd pass on the other wax paper mag. 20 dollars each is a great price.

Thanks to all for the help.
After reading about those who got burned buying fake magazines, I hated to become a statistic.

| Mags
I would steer clear of the wax paper wrapped one. I learned that the hard way a few months ago. At a gun show I came across a wax paper wrapped mag. Seller assured me it was "Genuine USGI mag" He didnt want me to peel the paper to inspect for a stamp because it "would ruin the value" Long story short. It didnt have any stamp on it once i cleaned it up. Research on this site leads me to believe its Chinese or Tawainese.

Cliff | the tiny white specs are carbonate crystals from the parko process.
the aluminum paper is aluminum and paper sandwich treated with a rust inhibitor (VCI), they were then sealed in the bags.

Well I went back and checked out the OM mags. Using the information that I learned here, I was pretty sure they were USGI, so I purchased both. $20ea. I assumed both were OM but one turned out to be UHC when I unwrapped it.
Here's what they look like.
[IMG] [/IMG]
The UHC has some of the wrapper stuck to it.

And the only wrapper that had writing on it was the OM wrapper.

I think your good to go. Especially on the OM mag. The marked follower seals it. Most followers weren't marked. Only OM and BRW did off the top of my head. I'm not familiar with the that type packaging. I know the mags better than what they come in. They are either still new or rewraps. The UHC mag is USGI as well. Union Hardware Company.
Good Deal.
