Question Cost of Shipping Ammo

I placed an order with Classic Firearms for 3 cans (160 rounds each) of 7.62 NATO, Radway Green ammo for $195. The shipping cost ended up being $56. That works out to almost 11 cents per round for shipping with a total cost per round of 52.5 cents. What are some other options to lower the shipping cost?

Thanks,

Hobo

Both The Ammoman and Widner's have DAG and MEN by the case and in the .45 a round price range. If you have to have Radway you'll need to check out a number of ammo vendors listed in the "Cheapest Ammo" section to see who's got it. What type cans was you ammo shipped in......that's a LOT of money for shipping!

That's what I thought also. They don't tell you how much shipping is when the order is placed (online). I do check the vendors list in the ammo section on this forum. Seems that somewhere I saw a shipping rate of $12 from one of the ammo suppliers. I'll research it more with my next order. It is shipped in .50 cal ammo cans.

$56 to ship 500rds seems to high, and classic arms is pretty close to you.. I bought a couple of 750rd cases of radway from SOG and had them shipped to my dads in Ga. and I think shiping was $26 per case. Also I have found that Wideners is reasonable and flexable with shipping. I have bought 2 of the 440 rd cans of M855 and shipping to my dads was, i think $16 total. Wideners has also been good enough to send me bullets and stuff in Flat Rate USPS boxes (called them and they put as many as they could fit) to ship here to Alaska and charged me just what the flat rate box cost..

Thanks from Hobo Hilton

I ordered 2 cans of Radway Green (160 rounds per can, linked in fours) from AIM Surplus. Shipping was $20 total...$10 per can. I selected UPS 'ground, home delivery'...the least expensive option offered. Took 5 days from the time I placed the order.

mtime7,

Now that I know some suppliers will ship in the flat rate boxes... That's what I will start asking for. I thought packages had to be marked "Ordinance" but my FedEx delivery girl said sometimes people just tape up a ammo box and ship it. I guess I'll be getting creative.

Thanks,

Hobo

I use

http://www.grafs.com

And they seem to be pretty decent in terms of cost. You might compare?

hobo, that was on bullits, not loaded ammo.. I don't think usps will move loaded ammo.. Fedex and UPS is very expensive up here (AIR only) so shipping is generaly done in flat rate boxes. Not saying they won't but definatly against the rules, I have broken those rules before but try not to advertise

I would try finding a supplier closer to your neck of the woods, wideners is all the way on the other coast. or ammoman where the shipping is in the price

Just talked to AIM..... Shipping charge on 1,000 rounds, to me, would be $58.00

it is against the law for individuals to ship ammo through the u.s.p.s. but a manufacturer may use them with no problem. midway ships wwb through usps. it is also against the law for any carrier to ship it unless marked with orm or odm sticker and reading "small arms cartridges". if you ship it through ups or fed ex, you must declare this to them or be in violation of the law. anyone may ship projectiles only as long as they are non incendiary or not tracer rounds.

ammo

I went to the gun-deals website and put in my zip code. I am about 40 miles from you, midway between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Same company, same ammo and amount. The calculator on gun-deals shows $26.68 to ship with a cost per round of 46.2 cents. Your shipping seem a little steep.

Actually it seems that you got charged for shipping twice. Give them a call and see what they say.

This shipment went to the west coast so that distance was a little farther. I did speak with them this AM and went over all of the shipping details. They refuse to ship in the flat rate boxes. I was told they only ship one method. Basically, it became a "take it or leave it" type of conversation. On future purchases will be checking the cost of ammo + shipping divided by number of rounds. The online "sorting" feature (cost per round) of some ammo suppliers is somewhat misleading. I'm curious as to how much the reloaders are paying for shipping on their components (per round).
