What is "OTM-RP"?

This is a discussion on What is "OTM-RP"? within the Ammunition forums, part of the M14 M1A Forum category; OK, I give up...just what in the world is "open-tip match, rear penetrating " ammo? Open-tip match I understand, i.e. Hornady's 62/69/77 grain match bullets ...

What is "OTM-RP"?

OK, I give up...just what in the world is "open-tip match, rear penetrating" ammo? Open-tip match I understand, i.e. Hornady's 62/69/77 grain match bullets for the .556, but what does the "rear penetrating" mean? What's the plus/minus compared to standard match ammo?

Thanks.

where did you find "RP" on the shell/box and which brand of ammo was it? Never heard of "rear penetrating" before.

As I understand it, it's similar to the Hornady Trophy Bear Claw ammo, but designed for military use to replace the M855 green-tip penetrator round. It has an open tip like the long range match target ammo, a lead core, and a solid copper shank in the rear or the bullet. It's supposed to be deflected less after penetrating light cover like doors or windshields. That's the idea, anyway.

Designed as a replacement for the M855 "green tip" round, this ammunition is virtually identical to cartridges currently being issued to Special Forces units fighting in Afghanistan. With a reverse drawn copper jacket giving it better penetrating capability; this "barrier blind" bullet has significantly less deflection when fired through light cover such as doors, windows, and thin walled structures. Designated as an Open Tip Match, Rear Penetrating (OTMRP) round, it has a heavier 62 grain bullet with an aerodynamic boat tail.

I asked that question a few weeks ago, I got some from CTD and didnt realize what I had. It's very accurate stuff, 3/4" @ 100yds out of my 16" RRA AR. I believe BVAC made the stuff at CTD.

"Rear Penetrat-OR" perhaps?

Or is the root word of Penetrate 'Pennance' ? It's a sorry bullet? ;^)

The accuracy may be an issue... I was comparing the OTM-RP ammo with M855... the accuracy of the OTM ammo was about twice as good as the M855... 3/4" vs 1.25"

Otmrp mk 319 mod 0 is a wall penetrator, the front defeats the wall the copper slug rear goes through for the kill. The linked slide show states test results with accuracy and precision results.
