The B36

From the movie Strategic Air Command. Funny I don't remember any other MAJCOMs with a movie named for them.

One of my favorite movies. Always recall my days at Carswell. As a side note, my squadron commander lived in the house Jimmy Stewart used in the movie.

Is the one that crashed into Lake Worth from Carswell still there? I know they removed all the 'sensitive' stuff, but it would have cost too much to bring the plane up, and it became obsolete shortly after that.

Wow, what a behemoth. Kinda like a jackalope crossed with a duck-billed platypus...

Just out of curiosity, did they run the jets and the props together all the time, or did they shut the jets down at cruising altitude?

The COE pulled the last pieces out of Lake Worth in 1999. Some sheet metal and pieces of wheel struts. Most of salvage was done in the early 60's. On a another note, the FE who was suppose to be on that flight, was a gentleman by the name of Archie Ingram. He a dental appointment and missed the flight. I flew with Archie in C-130's out Chicago. He had something like 12,000 flight hours when he retired in 1991.

Great vid!

There was one of these on static display at Chanute AFB, IL when I was there for tech school back in 1969. It was the home of many pigeons who seemed to enjoy strafing the formations of students as we marched to class right past her nose. It seemed HUGE to me then!

As most of you know, Jimmy was a pilot in the AAF in WWII and flew B-17s with the 8th AF. He eventually became a squadron or wing commander, I forget which. I knew his crew chief, Earl Forstall, who was from New Orleans and ran a typography shop when I first got into advertising after I was discharged. Earl told some interesting stories about Jimmy, who he claimed he kept in touch with on a regular basis. He spoke very highly of Jimmy as an officer, leader, and as a person.

Just as an aside to charley xray's trip down memory lane. I attended tech school at Chanute in late 1961. The "36" was there then. Story has it that it made an emergency landing at Chanute, runway was not long enough for it to take off and so became a static display.

Did they use the same fuel for prop and jet engines? Or did they have high octane and kerosine on board?
