Does it count if the unit you were assigned to used to be assigned to SAC?

Not really. SAC was SAC, a truely different world in the USAF.

Here's one to ponder. How do you guys think General LeMay would have responded to 9/11?
Saddam?
I met him at Bomb Comp way back when. Man, I'll bet a large chunk of the middle east would still be smoking!

Something many people probably don't know about 9/11 - every bird was loaded to the gills for an exercise. And STRATCOM sent the message to load the tickets. LOTS of running around over that!

I was on alert at K.I. back in the '70s when a puter chip failed at NORAD. The horn blew at 0darkthirty. The MSG was real. We were the first Tanker out of the chocks. I had no idea my heart could beat that fast, and I had already done my helo deal in VN. Looking at the business end of a H model's tail gun was not pleasant. The hammer head was as far as we got. Needless to say, nobody got a wink of sleep the rest of that night.

I can imagine! I heard about that. The closest we came to launching was when a fire broke out in the forest near Wurtsmith. We sat out on the alert facility deck and watched the flames in the treetops off the end of the runway. If the fire had jumped the river, the message was sitting on the senior controller's desk to get us airborne. Interesting times. Some I even miss. |
