Guess I'm a poser with my avatar -only one SAC tour, Offutt 82-85, but it made a big impression on me and my career.

Burpelson AFB around 1964.

Had a little incident where I went insane, and ordered the 843rd Bomb Wing past fail safe points to attack their targets inside Russia, "Wing Attack Plan R" which was my prerogative in the event of disruption of senior leadership. Mandrake was none too pleased....

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No, I don't think I do, sir, no.
General Jack D. Ripper: He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Saddam?

I met him at Bomb Comp way back when. Man, I'll bet a large chunk of the middle east would still be smoking!
He would have followed the orders given to him by the National Command Authority, just like those in charge of the Air Force did on 9/11.

With that said, I truly believe that had he decided to run for President in 1968 he would have won by a landslide no matter which party nominated him and most likely we would have seen the Soviet collapse about 15 years early.
