My friend, we didn't have to buy it, we have it. After reunification we got a lot of stuff from Warsaw Pact forces.

The stories that have come out of this years later is that the F-18s had their a$$es handed to them. The US had seriously underestimated the effectiveness of helmet mounted sights and HOBS missiles....

Some of it was sold to the US. The Navy operated the Hiddensee (a Soviet designed and built Tarantul missile corvette), as the USNS Hiddensee, from 1991 to 1996.

And that Soviet short range Air to air missiles were far more effective than we thought. The basically scrapped the ASRAAM project because the Soviet missiles were already better than their planned future advanced missile.
