I'd call it an overpriced boondoggle that will waste Billions of dollars on overruns, might be fielded this century, and still only be able to marginally do better than the current bombers in the inventory.

Isn't the current B-2 "a long range strike bomber"?

Looks to me like they should've called it the B-2.1

At least they'll finally be able to retire one of the all time hangar queens. (The B-1)

Don't know about that, the B-1B was a nice drop platform during OIF. It was my favorite due to it's station time. It carries plenty of JDAMs for either GPS or laser designation.

Nah, they will keep the B-1 and axe the A-10.

Yep. She kicked some taliban ass.

But honestly do we really need a long range strategic bomber? When are we going to drop bombs over there again? We can't drop bombs now because someone may get hurt. I don't think another trillion dollars is going to keep people from getting hurt when we drop bombs on them.

The B-1 is (much like the A-10) an aircraft that never faced it's true adversary. The rear ECM suite was never made to work as advertised. Pretty much every time it was turned on at the rear of the aircraft it would send all the avionics up front into a tizzy. Fine when facing a minimal surface to air threat, but it AND the A-10 would be hard pressed to succeed against Russian threats of 30 years ago let alone those of today. The Bone was supposed to be a nuclear penetrator and ended up being a hugely expensive bomb truck.

Sometimes a bomb truck is what you need, especially when you have multiple capable spotting platforms and you have air superiority.
