Those guys must have had their hands full when they needed to go in a hurry. Can't steer it until 60+ miles per hour. Steer with the outer engines?? I'll bet that got a little touchy at times.

I've heard that more planes were lost in WW2 due to accidents and bad
weather than combat.

My dad flew one of these...in the 50's.....I have heard him talk about steering with the engines on the ground....

Fifi came into Teterboro NJ several years back and I went out with a friend and his father who served on a B29 in the Pacific. My wife got the tour..

Pretty Dang cool. I want to get a ride on one of the last B-17 Flying Fortresses but it's hard to part with $400 for a 1/2 hour up and down joy ride. I suppose its not getting any cheaper.
