Thumbs up Range report with non hooded NM rear sight

I changed out my hooded NM rear sight with a non-hooded NM one from AmmoGarand.com. I like the look of it better than the other one and it works just as well for me.

I only had 4 match rounds left from last week before I do my monthly match ammo reloading workday so I went out to the club range today as we have an iron sight match next month.

First shot was high and a bit left so I went down 2 clicks and over one, I was more aware of my trigger technique and breathing as I have had some issues from not shooting matches for a few years so I went to work.

40.2 grains of 4064 in an LC case trimmed to spec, CCI primer pushing a Sierra MK 168 grain HPBT. 100 yards off a bag. I am well pleased with the results considering it's just a stock issue 1962 SA chromelined barrel with a VN era walnut stock. The rest of the rifle is SA USGI parts.

I'm looking forward to getting my eyes examined next week and update my vision ability, it's been about 4 years since I had a new pair of specs.

The only bitch I have with my rifle is I need to rough up the pistol grip area as it's a bit slick. Other than that she's a real doll not only in her simplistic issue looks but how well she performs in my hands.

Daaaamn, joker! You might better just leave her as is. Roughing her up? She might like it or she might not. Fine shooting Sir!

Well done
Are you holding 6 o'clock on the black or are you coming up a bit and holding 6 on the orange?

As for your grip on the stock with your shooting hand shot long range bolt gun for quite a while and on hot days with humidity and sweat my grip would slip a bit on me from time to time and usually stippled that area to prevent that. I do my own stippling but it is time consuming and got the idea of a golf glove for that hand and did buy one to see if it helped. Well, it works like a charm for the leather is very thin and you can pick up a dime with them and no problems feeling the trigger itself. Since I am right handed bought a left hand golf glove and they usually lasted a couple seasons before a hole showed up in the trigger finger part. They do provide a non slip grip yet comfortable and also helps when grabbing a hot barrel after a match. Just a suggestion.

Strict interpretation of Service Rifle competition rules would probably make any 'roughing up' of the stock a violation. Whether anyone would notice or complain is another matter.

The 'golf glove' suggestion is good and is allowed. If the stock has a high-gloss finish, then re-doing with a matte finish might also help.

I use the 6 o'clock hold, always have except when I once tried the center hold years ago, it didn't work for me. There was too much verticle variation for my front sight placement to be acceptable, groups were all spread out.
Some swear by it and do very well, it just don't work for me.

Also I'm past the point in my age to change something that has always worked for me.

I use the orange stickie for sighting in so I can see the target holes better with the inexpensive range scope I use.

After zeroing in the bullets take care of the rest.

Awards Showcase

What size targets are they? They look larger than the typical SR-1.

As for the grip, I keep the original rough, open-grain style finish on my walnut stocks. It makes for good purchase.

The grip was real slick prior to me refinishing it. Well used and just very smooth. My problem is my hands are very rough and dry. I don't have the nice, soft office job manicured nails type of hands like some folks do. I have worked on Harleys, built homes and was a pro drummer most of my life so my hands are like beef jerky. I'm gonna hit it with some #80 sandpaper and I think that will do the trick. I never had this problem in the past but then again I wasn't 61 years old either.

The target is made by KleenBore and is an NRA B-6 (C) (1985).

10 3/4" square and the black is 8" across.
