range days this week.

During two recent range sessions, I shot several groups just under an inch and several that are "80 percent," meaning that 4 shots measure below an inch and one errant shot opens the group considerably. I think this trend is very encouraging; during the past month I have had touble getting below an inch. Many groups were bigger. My good groups are posted here.

Two primary factors contribute, I believe. First. A month after I removed my GC shim this winter, I discovered that the unitized GC does not remain close to the lock nut during firing: during recent disassembly of the gas sytem, I observed that the lock nut could turn past 8 o'clock with finger pressure. My groups without the shim were disappointing. I reinstalled the shim a week ago, which permitted finger tightening the lock nut to 5 o'clock.

Second. Having trouble attaining a clear sight picture for many moons, I recently stumbled upon a pair of glasses from 2010 which yielded a sharp scope dot and dark rays on my astig target. A sharp sight picture permits me to devote my attention to bench position and tigger control.

My sad story of my lengthy pursuit of a sharp sight picture is contained here:

I need some advice about bench position. The butt rests on a sand-filled leather bag. When I am aiming, the sligtly mushy bag permits me to push the butt downward to a more solid location. Should I try to hold the butt downward against the bag?

I have also been alternating a vented gas plug (drilled .067") and a solid plug. The vented plug has cured occasional stovepipng where the case is jammed against the receiver ring by the hump on the oprod. Accuracy is about the same with both. I know that the vented plug has slowed the cycling: with gas vent of .081, the bolt short strokes.

I know that I am not very scientifical about my adjustments: I can't change just one thing at a time

Your shooting good do why mess with a good thing.

But to answer your question on the rear bag use. You might want to try a squeeze bag instead of pushing the butt down into a bag.,the idea being you squeeze the bag to lift the butt for small adjustments before you make the pull.

I am working to solve to my rear bag deficiency: I am looking for a rear bag which doesn't have to be squeezed. I went to the range today after I made a few minor adjustments. I removed the gas cylinder so I could bend the handguard tabs on the barrel band. I deburred the shim that looked like it was nicked by the tabs. I deburred the cam on the firing pin tang and performed the tilt test, which worked very well. I am also filing the grip on my oversized stock to resemble the grip on old-style prone stocks and my McMillan "hunter" stock.
I shot with my chin resting on my comb for best sight picture.
Pics attached. Disclaimer. I shot today without the hand guard, to remove that variable.
