Questions about gas system

Veritical stinging today at the range. Focusing on reticle and natural respiratory pause, still I keep feeling like I may have gas system issues as well.

The three pictures below;
First one, a new (less than 100 rounds) grooved piston, strange wear marks to me, anyone else?

Second picture, gas plug has slight damage to the edge, not on threads but what would have caused that? Noticed it for the first time a week ago.

Third, 8:00 hand tight, which I've never worried about, I turn it back and torque gas plug, obviously not ideal but I don't seem to have anything loose, although I do get apparent gas leakage front band of cylinder, and I notice solvent leaking around that spot when I clean it.

I ain't no expert, but the piston looks like small pieces of metal have splintered. Is that just the coating or can you feel/see that it is actual metal missing?

What's up with the front band? In the 3rd pic it looks like it is blocking the gas cylinder port.

Are those welds or just carbon? Do you have a side picture?

Nearly all M14 gas locks tighten at the 8 to 10 position, then get backed off for the gas plug. Perfectly normal.

Thanks from gettinolder

It appears to only be surface coating, but looking at it through a magnifying glass it looks scraped rather than "wear", fingernail doesn't really pick anything up.

Is that the Sadlak tin coated grooved piston?
That doesn't look good and it doesn't look like my 2 Pistons which don't have any wear after thousands of rounds.
Check the inside of the cylinder walls to see if something got in there.
Or you got a bad piston. It doesn't look normal to me.

That scape wouldn't happen to line up with that weld would it? Maybe just get another regular piston and try it. You shoot a lot! Even more than me. Does your rifle still shoot well?

It doesn't look like my non grooved Sadlak either, nor the SAI, going to look closely though.

I'm not really a short barrel guy.... But I would still shim the G/C too get close too optimum alignment as I could. Then next on my things too do hit list, Dwell. I would trim the GC Plug too get what/all I could out of it and retest.

Thanks from gettinolder

Thanks Phil, this is the first time I think I've elicited a response from you and in hundreds of hours of researching every conceivable issue I could imagine I had picked up on that fact (that you don't care for shorties) Don't blame anyone for that and if I had it to do over I'd probably go 18.5 or 19. I am the only one on this little island that shoots an M1a so had nobody to get feedback from before I bought it years ago.

I only get a darker copper colored tempering discoloration around the small port hole on my 3 Sadlak pistons. But is smooth, just a tempering color by the hole I assume is caused by heated gases. The rest of the piston area looks brand new.

Don't give up on it, just learn from it. This thread will teach people with socom length rifles for years to come. I don't know much other than the obvious, but I like your rifle especially the stock. I have learned from you. This is what a forum is for!

Thanks from gettinolder
