Range Report

First time to the range with the M1A. Loaded up some Sierra 168 with 41.5 grns
of IMR 4895. Grouped good but it would short stroke, going to bump it to 42.0 and see what happens. I also want to try some 2520. Would hve been a good group if I wouldn't have pulled the one shot.

Excellent shooting, however your rifle should cycle this load just fine.

Could there be another reason for the malfunction other than ammo?

42.0 is near max so 41.5 really shouldn't be a problem. Must be some other reason. Nice group. 100 yds?

Hmm, like the above said, cycling issues with 41.5 is concerning.

oly makel der andy! Nice shooting.
Check the rifle and case headspace first.
41.5 should be more than enough to cycle unless there is something wrong with the weapon.

Always start with the ammo.

While popular, that recipe is actually a light target load. It often doesn't reliably cycle new rifles. You won't find factory ammunition loaded that light.

Bump up your load as you indicated. If your rifle cycles reliably, stick with it for awhile before reducing. Your rifle is fine. If you still have cycling issues, try factory Federal 168 M1A OTM. It was designed for this rifle. If that gives you problems, then you definitely have something amiss with the rifle.

I loaded some 150's no problem at 40 grns of IMR 4895 cycled perfectly, ran into problems with the 168's go figure. It's got the Sadlak NM piston but that should have affected cycling too for the 150's.

If you are using a grooved piston, then the the 168 load is definitely on edge of being too light.

The 150 could still work because it will have more pressure left at the gas port.

That is a good group, period - unless you absolutely called that on out a little, it is most likely within the probability of group size for your rifle.
Was the head space of the rounds OK? My guns cycle fine with 40.5 IMR 4895 with the 168.

Thanks from Bamban
