Help needed - flyers with 10 rd mags??

Hello Forum, I'm looking for some ideas.

My M1A has been a great shooter, until I got some 10rds mags for match shooting.

Shooting sighters in a match recently, X, 10, 10, X, 6 at 6. ??

Loaded a single round in the same mag and shot an extra; 6 at 6.

Thought rear site had spun - had not.

The rifle does not seem to like the 10rd mags. The last shot out of the mag flies, low.

Any suggestions as to what to look for?

These 10rd mags are a tight fit in the mag well and take some effort to get locked in. Some of my 20rds mags are quite loose and even can rattle a bit while locked in.

Put a follower from a 20-rounder in the 10-round mag and try last shots?

Maybe the 10 round mag causes a shift in your position. They are shorter than the 20s correct? Between dwell time and unlocking aren't the projectiles out of the barrel?

you can make a rounded oval shaped wooden block to fit inside the 20 round mags or screw 2 wooden dowels together to fit

Shoot 10 rounds with same setup and ammo with a 20 round mag for comparison. If you get 10 10s, then play with the mag.

What brand 10 rd mag? Can you shoot match with 20 rd mag?

I remember reading, years ago, that one of the things the service rifle team shooters were told to do was to take some magazines out and shoot groups. Any magazines that "caused flyers", or the group to open up, where discarded and the shooters chose magazines from the ones the rifle fired good groups with.

I asked an old Navy Team shooter I used to work with/talk with sometimes about that and he said he'd heard that, too, but he stuck with an M1 so he had not experienced it (short arms and the magazine of the M14 got in the way of his support arm.)

Thanks for the suggestions, ideas.

I had a chance today to to shoot a few groups quickly at 100 yds.

The fliers seem now to happen with all mags 10 or 20. Puzzling.

Take a look please at these pictures. Except for the 10 rd group and the one group with reloads, The last shot from a mag was always a low flier at 7 o'clock.

Something wrong with the action in the stock?

Any suggestions, ideas would be welcomed.

Perhaps I was bragging too much about how well my M1A shot - got hit with the curse?

If you put six rounds in the magazine and shoot a five shot group do you still get #5 down low?

If you put six rounds in the magazine and shoot all six does only #6 go low or do 5 and 6 go low?

Is it "legal" in competition to load 5 live rounds with a snap cap/dummy round on the bottom so you can be sure you only put 5 rounds down range?

Thanks from JEFFJP_N_JJ

I hate to be the one to suggest this, but those are not consistent 10/X ring groups. Perhaps you're not staying focused, or even worse, have convinced yourself that the last shot out of the magazine is going to be bad.

Tim, you observation is correct. The GGG Nato has never been 10-ring ammo. About 4-5" groups. I use it for testing. My reloads have been solid 10-ring.

I am trying to figure out the reason for the "consistent" 7 o'clock last shot out of a mag.

I will figure this out on my own, but sure would like some help.
