Beware the smartphone: Applied Ballistics android app error

Beware taking for granted the application on your smartphone is displaying accurate firing solutions.
While in the process of validating the output of the app against a recently purchased Accuracy1st whiz wheel, noticed they did not produce same firing solutions.
Long story made short, noticed the AB app did not update BC properly when changing from G1 to G7 drag models. This error is not readily apparent at shorter distances.
Your experiences may vary, but this changes my perspective on the value of smartphone apps, and will now prioirtize the Accuracy1st analog solver for firing solutions, only supported by smartphone or Kestrel for ambient conditions data.

One rifleman's opinion.

Email Litz at applied ballistics about it.

All ballistic calculators are incorrect. They get you in the ballpark and will get you on that get but the best thing to do is write everything down and make a data card to take to your stock. I still use my night force program for an old pda and IMO is the best calculator ever made but trash in equals trash out.

All models are wrong; some are useful.

I'm using Ballistic AE. I mainly got it to measure groups with, but it is pretty chock full of features. It has a truing function that will make your table line up with realworld data. I doubt I'll ever get into that.

I generally don't need it for the ballistic parts except to play around with when it's too cold (like today) to go to the range.

I did email, but received no response.

The main takeaway from this experience for me is that i have more confidence in the analog Accuracy1st whiz wheel to produce a firing solution. There is no recalculation of the base assumptions required; projectile, BC, drag curve, etc.
Plus, you are not tethered to having a solver that needs batteries.

I had to look up the Accuracy 1st Whiz Wheel-was reading the directions on how to use. Seems like a pretty cool calculator.

The best one I have used is the old exbal (nightforce) program. It's discontinued and is for palm or pocket PC or windows. Has a multi BC feature, trajectory validation, and much much more.

I like it too. Once you have a wheel customized to your base velocity, twist rate, and BC bullet type, one only solves for density altitude (and distance) for a firing solution.

I use Varget in my reloading recipe, which only has a 8 FPS deviation across 0F to 125F, making the recipe immune to ambient temperatue fluctuations, but of course not the temp effect on density altitude.

They only make an estimate based on ballistics, and in a bubble would be spot on. The Apps cant account for all of the variables. I use Strelok Pro and after inputting trajectory validation find it to be very accurate. Without putting in the TV it will still get you pretty close.
