New Experience

I've never had a match tuned iron sight rifle that I've scoped. Shooting with the scope gave me the confidence that the rifle and ammo was capable of 1.5 MOA consistently with an Average Radius of about .5MOA. The problem with shooting the scope means that when I went back to Irons I was going to be faced with a brutally honest assessment of my prone sling hold with irons. Any variation from the above numbers was going to be all on me.

Had perfect conditions this morning with good sun behind me and no wind at all 30 degrees F and no mirage. Dang. No excuse there. My hope was that the average radius would stay about the same and the Max Group size would open up. Pretty much what I got.

One minute left adjustment would have gotten a 100 5X. Target shot prone slow fire from sling with my new NM .520 rear sight and 168 ELDs.

2 MOA is decent shooting with irons.

Look at it from this perspective. You shot that group on the 200 yard SR target intended for slow standing and sitting rapid. Had you shot that same group centered on the 600 yard target reduced for 200 yards (MR-52 target) you likely would have scored a 98 with random X's thrown in. Double that to 196 for a 20 shot slow prone stage and you would have scored at high master level for the stage.

Good shooting.

I accept my 2 MOA "wobble zone".... I just wish I could maintain two MOA throughout the day. By the end of the match, I get to the 600yd slow fire it has expanded to 3 MOA!

I hear you there. Personally, I feel like my wobble doesn't grow too much, but my technique and execution suffer. Sight alignment and trigger pull mistakes cost me points.

In this test I was really hoping the results would prove (to me at least) that average radius is the best measurement of a rifle's performance when using iron sights. In a 10 shot test, both my max group size and Average Radius grew by about 30%. However, I kind of suspect that 20 shots would shrink the Average Radius and probably grow the max a little.
