Odd 7.62 Nato Ammo

Hey all new to the forum.

I have a case of 7.62 Nato ammo, I have had it for a very long time. LC 64 on the head, on the can is reads Ball M80 7.62 MM 8 round Clips, inspected in 1972 on the crate.

I opened the ammo can and the ammo is in bandoleers in 8 round garand clips.

Why the garand clips?

Awards Showcase

Lightbulb

Because some M1 Garand's were changed to 7.62x51mm.

My brother has two Garand's, one fires M1 ammunition while the other fires M80 ammunition.

Ok,

So apparently there were Garands manufactured or converted to 308.

Ok great.

Some were known as the T35:

Others (most) were were just Rifle, Caliber 7.62mm, M1

Ah, another item for the bucket list. Do I really need one? Silly question. I can always find room for another .308/7.62.

Thanks from unkola

Yep, IIRC the Navy toyed with the 7.62mm chambered M1 more than the Army, but once the M14 came, went and showed up in surplus after the M16 was fielded the point was kind of moot.

The early conversions used a steel chamber insert cemented in the chamber of a .30 caliber Garand so only 7.62mm ammo would chamber, but it didn't work for a number of reasons. So they ended up rebarreling and adding an insert into the clip well so .30 caliber ammo wouldn't fit. A number of match conditioned 7.62mm M1's were built and used by the Navy and Air Force teams back in the day but eventually the M14 took over.

That is a rare and valuable can!

The CMP sold off some USGI Navy 7.62x51 barreled receivers not too long ago.

I remember when known top rifle builders said to stay away, potential grenade! I could never see the attraction to one. I love the M1 as is and the M14 as is, both are perfection in their own way.
