Aftermarket Handguards

Whats the consensus on aftermarket handguards compared to the Springfield fiberglass? I was thinking about picking up m14.ca's Scout handguard, but after reading up on all the "garage accurizing" from you guys and inletting my handguard, siliconing it to the barrelband, I thought two things: the multiple barrel contacts the aftermarket handguards make may hurt accuracy; and what if i throw on one of these aluminum handguards and it's making contact w my receiver or stock and i cant modify it?

What are your thoughts?

I have only used USGI regular, USGI vented, Fulton Armory Handguards (these are great for sanding and modding), Polytech/Norinco, and SAI hanguards.

Touching the barrel I wouldn't worry about. Touching the stock is what I would worry about. I would think they make them with plenty of clearance for the barrel. However I do not know about the outer sides.

I would send an email over to Black Feather or PM someone on here named "Lazerus2000" or something like that.

USGI handguards will contact USGI stocks. The rifle was designed that way.

Relieving the sides of the handguard is part of the match grade modifications and really doesn't mean much unless you are performing all of them. They are intended to compliment each other, as each rifle behaves differently. All you are doing with a service grade rifle is letting dirt in.

The important thing to consider when using any "Scout" style handguard or scope mount is how it will affect barrel harmonics. In some cases the added weight reduces barrel whip and vibration, but in others it makes it worse.

The bottom line is that you won't know how it behaves on your rifle until you try it.
