Ok, Phil. Since I'm not a builder, I'd go to Bula for a bag of parts and ship them to Jon to do one of his superduper builds in his up graded stocks, then, go to about a dozen Appleseed's so that I could learn to hit a bull in the butt with my new rifle. The weak link of any rifle system is the loose nut behind the butt plate. That would be my dream rifle but since, like you, I haven't won the lottery and the donations have not been pouring in, I guess it'll have to remain a dream.

1. NM reamed F/H with lug
2. NM .062 front sight trimmed down too give 6 clicks up from the bottom @ 200yds with my pet hand load for ATC. for LR use a .072 front sight trimmed down too match my 600yds ATC setting. This keeps from racking out the rear sight at 1000yds.
3. Gas cylinder assembly. NM unitized, I prefer the USMC welded method with the added M25 vent mod. Gas Piston its a toss up either the Sadlak grooved TiN or the Bula Nitrated with added groove. I've played with the off side of the spindle valve and like how its working but I've also toyed with what I will name the John Wolfe piston blow hole mod. It works real good as well. Gas cylinder slid forward and shimmed too just uncover the G/P for some added dwell time and a trimmed piston tail too finish it off and make the dwell time perfect. Gas cylinder lock timed as well.
4. Trim and float handguard.
5. Barrel, I'm a fan of 5R rifling so Obermeyer or one of JWolfe's 5R X-ring killers, ROT 1/11 chamber reamer same deal.
6. For some odd reason I would like too reduce the inside clearance of the op-rod guide too half its nominal clearance. Its a target rifle so it doesn't need too rattle side too side as much as a regular guide allows. Weather it shows any benefit I would like too find out.
6a. NM spring guide with CS spring along for the ride.
7. USGI bolt lapped in with the trigger group and mag installed too support the bolts tail, I would like too see 80% or better contact on both sides before the chamber is reamed. And while I'm playing with the bolt snip off 2 coils off the ejector spring so the cases don't get pitched into the next county.
8. NM/2a rear sight assembly with .595 hood aperture, add ball and detent mod too the windage knob, this gives a finer .25moa adjustment. If needed also add McCoy mod too sight base if windage doesn't quite track right.
9. Give Shooting Sights Adj trigger and slim fast hammer a try.
10. Lugs, the more the better. Sandwiched in and bolted down into a bedded Mac syn stock.

I think that about covers it, barring anyone giving me the winning lotto numbers? I do except donations.........
Phil, I do not know what I could do to improve upon what you have stated.....
I have 2 double lugged guns (long story) - One of them is in a very heavy wooden Bishop (or Fajen- been a log time ago) that the original builder for me name it Bertha (because of he big stock).
The other is a double lugged, bedded into an early McMillan stock, gas system unitized by wielding, etc. etc.Right now it has a Krieger 1:10 barrel in it, I have no clue as to round count as the gun left my hands several years.
If I ever re-barrel it , I would like to put an Obermeyer on it..... probably better get the blank in hand sometime soon.
I too would like to try the Shooting Sight trigger and hammer (actually have one in hand).
Another thing I would not mind trying is to use an M1 buttplate rather than the M14 --- probably makes no difference but look interesting.

After doing that, would it shoot any better than it has/does ???? probably not but it would be cool.

Thanks from Phil McGrath

Doc, we know there is more than one way too fry a cat. Be that as it may, that's my current thinking on the "Ultimate" rifle.

The hand guard would be sanded so there is no contact with the stock or the barrel, except where the clips meet the barrel. The Hand Guard would be red silicone at the front band. The Op-rod Guide would be timed to line up the Op-Rod, center, with the Gas Piston. The Receiver would be from Either Springfield or Fulton unless I came across some more Old School Smith Ent. Receivers. The rear sights would be National Match, though I would have it scoped. The trigger would be worked to a crisp 4.5# pull. The whole action would be bedded to the Mac stock with Steel or titanium Devcon putty. There would be rails up front left and right and a By-pod stud.
Except for the bedding, receiver, and barrel, that is the way mine is set up,
Best I can get is 1"-1-1/4", with 3 shots in about 3/4 to 7/8 and two more opening things up. I also don't have the Mac stock or bipod. I guess I need to build a new rifle.
