Pleasant surprise at the range today.

I drug my M1A SM out of mothballs today, first time in about 4 years. Wanted to revisit some top loads from a few years ago. So had along some XM80 16, some of the FC M1A ammo and 10 ea. of 41.5 and 42.5 of IMR4064 behind the Nosler 168 J4 bullet, got lots of them. Rifle shot way low at first, cranked it up and was back on at 100. The ball was a bit scattered at 100 but it did better at 200 with 3 in about 3 inches left to right. The 41.5 load came in with two groups of just over an inch. The load of 42.5 shot poorly with the first 5 after a snake pull thru and one fouler for some reason, 2nd 5 turned in 5 in a fat inch. The surprise was the last group of the day. The FC M1A ammo shot the tightest group of the day with 5 right at an inch and one called, with the other 4 in about .6 inches. Perfectly zeroed now too. Unfortunately the county range I shoot at posts targets twice a day with no shooter called cease fires to collect targets so I don't have anything to show for it. I know, I know, no pics, it didn't happen. But it did, really, that's no BS, lol. BTW, its the same rifle in my photo album that I entered in the Nov. contest.

Nice Shooting!

I've also had some pretty good groups with the American Eagle 168 OTM "For M1A" ammo.

Thanks from WaM14gunner

You know what, pictures can lie as well as hunters and fishermen! It took guts to post this thread knowing what you would be subject too!

I do not bring a camera to the range, I try to save the targets, sometimes the only witness is my wife, who thinks I am crazy anyway, or some old timers who say: "Wow, you had a good day!" Admittedly, that does not happen all that often these days!

I mean really, someone could shoot a target at 25 yards and label it 100 yards, who would know? Not the right thing to do, but who would know?

Congrats Sir!

Thanks from 11e40 and WaM14gunner

I don't thing anyone will try to call BS on this, whats the point? As you say we could all be shooting groups at 25 yds and posting them as 200 yds for all anyone knows if they weren't there. When I get exceptional targets I have the range master pull them for me on target change, then pick them up next week. In this case the groups while good are not exceptional and would have to wait a week to post pix, and by then who cares?

Sometimes a fella just can't win. When I show a 3-round or 5-round group and clarify that it was fired at 25 yards, I get, "Whatsamatta U". And that hurts. (That's my Alma Mater University in Frostbite Falls, MN.) They complain that it is not a 10-shot group and why isn't it at 100, 200, or 600 yards? Oh well...

A friend of mine at the range today, a retired SEAL Master Chief who I used to shoot NRA Highpower with but could never beat was shooting some Benchmark barreled 6.5 or other space/bolt gun with big Nightforce scope. I wandered over to see how he was doing, he says look in the spotting scope. It looked like bug splatter. How many rounds asketh I. 10 sayeth he. Two side by side 10 round groups that were just one ragged hole about one half inch edge to edge. He says if he is having a good day, he can almost halve that group size. Yikes! He is 65 now but he still has it.

Thanks from 11e40

An exceptional target is surely one to be proud of. When everything you know and have trained to do just comes together as it should. They make a fine keepsake. "By then who cares"...you care. I keep even some of my worse ones as a reminder and a training aid. I'm not as good as I once was, but I hope I am as good once as I ever was when necessary.

I use the little target plotter sheets to record all my shots for the reasons you mention, but getting the actual target is sometimes a pain. I know. I will post a pic of the target plotter from today! I will go write one up right now...lol.

Several people at different ranges over time have asked me what those little drawings with the dots and numbers mean. I take the time to explain them, although I sometimes think I am wasting my breath with some people. Before I had my spotting scope I would use the dots to record where I had called my shots. Now with the scope, just the POI sequence.
