I have a Springfield M1A and I just got a YHM Phantom suppressor I have not got the form 4 done yet but I was allowed to test fire the weapon at the dealer and on the first shot I had a blast of gas/air hit me in the face not hurt but not great for fallow up shots is this normal

Yessir, it's just gas blowback. Try investing in a Schuster adjustable gas plug, that should help.

Using Subsonic ammo would alleviate the "gas in the eye" but they will not cycle the action.

Using sub's in your M1A turns it into a straight pull bolt action, if thats the way you ant to go more power to you.

I recommend the gas deflector from the M14 blank firing devicel.

The gas in the eye from a Suppressed M1A is a significant distraction. Takes a lot of practice to not let it impact your shooting. The deflector mentioned above works well.

Suppressed M14's in a warzone was a 200 yard rifle and had to be cycled manually. They did have some interesting loads for it.

I'd considered suppressing mine until I shot one; decided I prefer my AR for that purpose. The gas in the eye is avoidable with the AR.
