quick range report, and more

Decided early this afternoon, after finally getting the Christmas tree down, that it was time for a range visit. The wife decided to come along, since I'd not yet had a chance to shoot the Glock 17 she got me as the big present this year. And no, I don't know where to find any more like her!

Range was locked and deserted when we arrived, sunny late afternoon, about 10 degrees and dead calm. We both took turns with the 17, and for her first mag ever on a pistol, managed a couple on target at 25 yds.

So then it was time to break out my beaut LRB M14 SA. I haven't been out it since September, no dry firing - nothing, so this report is really not about my badly neglected skills - its about LRB and what Paul has helped me do to improve this rifle.

In the fall, I finally wrung it out, and was a little disappointed to find it a 3MOA + rifle. So I called Paul for advice. Long and short, he set me up with a welded unitized front band /gas cylinder that he didn't want to sell because it didn't 'look good'. When it arrived, I just cleaned up the welds a little, blackened it, made a shim and put it all back together with the lock tightening up at 5PM, good enough.

At the range today, I had a snow and ice crusted wire spool to set up on with the bipod, Nikon scope and JAE Gen II, pretty much un-tuned, and white box Federal 149gr. One mag of 10 to settle it, and then the next mag on a 5.5" orange peel. Took my shots and ran out to get it. I was pretty happy (understatement) to find about 1.5" grouping of all 10 shots - about 1/3rd the group size from before.

I've got lots of work to do personally on my skills, but a day this rewarding won't be forgotten. So here now, I'm hoping that anyone who's dealt with Paul at LRB will appreciate once again what a great bunch of guys they are, and what a fine product they make. His patient advice has done me right. I'm convinced that with match ammo this is maybe a sub MOA rifle. So a big thanks to them.

Too bad I couldn't get the wife to try the big scary boom stick (yet). One day soon, I'll bet. What a great hobby!

Thanks from tonyben

They deffinately put together a nice shooting rifle. All you need to do is let them know what you would like it to do and if it is possible they build it. I had them put an M25 together for me a couple of years ago. Kreiger heavy ss barrel. Unitized gas cylinder, one of their muzzel brakes in a JAE gen 2. I popped a Leupold MK4 LTR and Have been getting groups very close to 1" from a bench. I changed the muzzel brake for one of the JP/Delta thingamobobs that 82nd has been working on. What a machine.
