Longest shot you've fired with M14.....

What is the furthest shot you've fired accurately with the M14/M1A? I'm curious to see how far the members here have fired their rifles. I have not fired past 150yds yet as I'm still trying to find a range without paying $600 in membership fees.

It was 1,000 yds at Camp Perry, 1974/5. This was with a GI NM light barrel completely accurized by myself, Springfield Armory receiver SN 0034xx. I asked the Army shooter scoring me how much to come up from 600 and he stated 21 clicks. OK..., so I checked my wind charts, the flags were standing straight out - not uncommon at Perry, and I couldn't believe it said 14 minutes so I cranked away at my sights. I laid there and fired. The target went down, which in itself was a feat, that I hit it at all!! The target came back up and it was a 9 at 6 O'clock. I was thrilled to say the least. Hit it dead on for wind, just came up two minutes for E. I think I ended up with a score in the 170s. Of course, I was shooting my across the course ammo, 168s. Little did I know then that they were unstablizing at about 900 yards but still hitting the target within reasonable accuracy. No one told me they were going in sideways so I assume they were hitting head on. Oh Yes, I forgot, I did shoot 1200 meters during a anti sniper course at Fort Meade with the old M21 system with M118 ammo.

Shot out from a 100, 300, 400, and out to 600 yards with my scoped Supermatch. From 100 to 300 yards out barely got some bullet drop... almost getting the similar results zeroing at a 100 yards, but past that 300 yards it get's interesting... I don't have my notes with me, but as a novice shooter I had a great time figuring things out trying to hit paper past 300 yards and beyond. What I notice though... using 147 gr POF Ball ammo it was never consistent. With 168 gr loads that my buddy reloads... OMG! So predictable... There is a real difference with what types of ammo you use.
I'm trying to set up and plan for a day to shoot out to a 1000 yards. I use National Forest and Grasslands for these long range shooting. I gotta find an ATV I can borrow.. there is no way I'm walking back and forth a 1000 yards

nam

Hi
The best confirmed shot I made was near Tam Key[not sure of the spelling] in Nam. It was 1240 meter's fired with a NM M14 with a Weaver 4x scope and firing national match ammo. I will admit it was mostly luck with the nva guy running. I used a lot of kentucky windage and the round seemed like it took forever to get there. It took so long I was getting ready to try another shot when the guy went down. It was a middle body shot hitting 3 inche's from the heart.
Needless to say I told the guy's it was a easy shot and I could do them all day.
I was really surprised I hit him. I didn't even want to try the shot with him running but the Lt. told me to take it.

Cool Research, still the best game in town......

In boot camp I can't remember anymore how far we shot our M14's on the target range. But I shot 560 yards 2-3 times a month with my NM M1A now.

All Army

600 yards, I scored 200-09xs at All Army Championships in 1985.

Good enough for 2nd in that individual match. First place was 200-11x.

Thanks from XXIV Corps and Sgt Nambu

Major Stuph,

Just curious, what barrel twist was that 168gr. bullet being spun by, that it would keyhole at 900?

Sub moa still at 300, but that is all I got to shoot so far. Wish I was still in the military were I could have an available range to shoot at for next to nothing. I'm just too poor of a college student to be affording membership to Lodi. Lodi Wi has available 1200yards to shoot at and it isn't like you just walk in. When I finally work my way into a full time LE position, yes I will be going to Lodi with the M21 to stretch it's legs.
