100 yard shooting

From 100 to 300 yards out barely got some bullet drop... almost getting the similar results zeroing at a 100 yards, but past that 300 yards it get's interesting... I don't have my notes with me, but as a novice shooter I had a great time figuring things out trying to hit paper past 300 yards and beyond. What I notice though... using 147 gr POF Ball ammo it was never consistent. With 168 gr loads that my buddy reloads... OMG! So predictable... There is a real difference with what types of ammo you use.
I'm trying to set up and plan for a day to shoot out to a 1000 yards. I use National Forest and Grasslands for these long range shooting. I gotta find an ATV I can borrow.. there is no way I'm walking back and forth a 1000 yards
1) .308 goes sub sonic at 100o yards. Have to know about it. Also it's critical to learn to read the wind... weather and so on to do the math mentally before you dial your sites in.

2) If you have USGI NM sites, dial in 44 clicks at 600 and see how high... 44 always was dead on for me at 1000 in Sunny California.. except in Winter time.

3) As noted, all the info you'll need to know about this will be in the book. Especially loading for this since the ammo is the 3rd in the trinity of things you need to shoot 1000 yards.

4) Go to Champion Choice Shooters accessories... get a $65 shooting coat, a shooting glove and a Mid Thomkins "Cheater" sling. for prone they can't be beat for accuracy. This stuff really counts past 300 yards. Past 300 is when the 3 steps needed for accuracy comes into play (Ammo, accurized rifle and skill set of the shooter). It's all in the coming book. and yes, I've gotten plenty of feedback from the team shooters to "double check myself"...

The M14 and M1A is the last and most accurate of a fine tradition of rifles issued in the US Military. It's long since been put back into use by Spec Ops and the USMC (misguided children) as the Designated Marksmanship Rifle. They were pulled from Naval stores. Ya ya.. it's all int he book. Look for info on the skill set too... this cranky old fart will be posing in positions. I ought to know that guy... chuckle.

Thanks from islandermyk

It took so long I was getting ready to try another shot when the guy went down. It was a middle body shot hitting 3 inche's from the heart.
Needless to say I told the guy's it was a easy shot and I could do them all day.
I was really surprised I hit him. I didn't even want to try the shot with him running but the Lt. told me to take it.

If the day was typical NAM and warm... you should have been able to see it going out past 600 yards. I've watched my rounds going downrange constantly. Hell of shot tho!! Be proud... you were headed to Carlos Hathcock status if you'd kept it up!

When it comes out, buy M14 Unclassified and take it out to 1000... it'll work fine and better then the Genesco Super Match rifles. I've had to work on to many of the Genesco rfifles... not in love with them. I preferred Elmer when he started "Springfield" commercial before it went to Genesco. I also knew the Karne Bros.. fine M1As... sorry I didn't grab one. They were always after me for parts chuckle.

The longest shot I've fired 'so far' with the M1A is 1,000 yards at a private range here in 29 Palms a couple months ago, with a friend's really accurate Standard M1A with a Premier scope on it. It was fantastic!

700 yards off hand with a Springfield Armory Scout Squad with irons. Using Kentucky windage I was lobbing rounds right on the target on a crisp sunny Missouri morning while competing against a guy with a FN-FAL on a private range. The guy swore to me all week the FN-Fal was superior and yadda yadda, so I took him to the wood shed and smoked him on his own range.

Longest I have shot is 600yards, that was on my friends open pasture at steel targets( wasn't worried about groups, i was just happy i could hit the target ). Its really too bad that I cant find a longer place to shot at, but there is no other long distance range that i can find besides my friends (and the closet real shooting range is only 300yards). So i guess i will be stuck at 600.
Good Shooting.

Just an FYI, my Ex shot a 187(can't remember the X count) at 1000 yards with her issue state gun, a M14NM during the old 41st Division State Highpower 1000 yard match. And she was shooting old school M118 Match, not M118 Special Ball, but the old white box M118 Match. This was in the 90 to 92 time frame... She shot her score at KD-22 Ft. Lewis, WA...
