I have done quite a bit of shooting at 600 and 1000 yards on paper shooting in regular NRA Rifle Matches.

Also I have done some "informal" combat shooting to 1000 yards as well.

However one of the most fun times I had with a M1-A, was when I was camping in a box canyon, and had a few thousand tracers. The "cliff" was around 1500 to 1600 yards away.

And in the evening, and after darkl, it was most spectactular, to fire at the cliff [this was in dry country, no chance of a fire], and have a dozen or so Tracer rounds in the air, on the way, at the same time....

NOW that WAS a lot of fun.

1200 yards, steel set up every 100 yards to 1000 then a jump to 1180. According to my notes I used 51.25 MOA of elevation at 9.5 MOA windage to hit at 1180. At 200 yards the plates were 4" square and progressed to 24"x32" targets past 900 yards. To see the target at 1200 yards we had to shoot off of round bails stacked on a wagon, (corn was too high). Shooting a M21. With the proper instruction it was actually quite easy, much easier than I thought it would be. Most fun I've had in years.

500 yards is easy once your sights are set (Ram size targets).hj Biggest problem is seeing the target ! Went to a well known shooting school for Mid-Range Rifle, my scoped rifle had major issues, so I used my Loaded M1A (iron sights). Targets were out to 700 yards. They were 12" wide, 18" tall. Couldn't see the 700 yard target the majority of the time but was hitting about 20%. The interesting part was an orange brick size target on a hill 925 yards away. I could not see the target except through the spotting scope. I calculated it's position in relation to nearby shrubbery and was hitting less than 2 feet away. If I can do that, a twenty or thirty year old would certainly hit it. Great rifle.

Awesome shooting from everyone! I'm only at 100 yds right now with my rifle, one ragged hole for 3 rounds. I have found some longer distance ranges around my area I'm going to try out. Realy like the story Greg, very impressive. And while I was a DM, 500 yards with the DMR M14.

Thanks from arcticdog and gregaba

100yds with simulated distance myself, which unfortunately, is the full length of our range back home. We do, however, have a 300yd range in Alaska I go to so I might have to bring my rifle back with me after leave to let it stretch it's legs.

300 yds, which last year seemed like a real long way off. I am going to visit the local 600 yd ranges next year. This was my first year with practice and competition at a club with 200 and 300 yd ranges.

I have shot two 3X600's at Washtenaw. Did not score well, I have real high cheek bones so I do not get a good cheek weld. I just bought a stock pack and put some foam under it to raise it up. Sad 600 practice is over for the year but I will get out at 2 or 300 for some prone. Hope the pack will do the job. This is the most fun gun I shoot !!!

900m @ Ft Bragg w/a M21 sniper rifle and ART 3x9 scope. This was in '78', it was the first class in a start-up sniper program(82nd ABN) after allowing to lapse post VN.
The 900m target was a steel silouette on a ridgeline @ the far end of the range .
The M21s had seen a fair amt of use/abuse and were not alarmingly accurate although
adequate, the concept of the ART scope I think still has great merit.
To make matters worse we were forbidden(as were our unit armorers) from even dissasembling the weapons for cleaning. Not even the bores!Maybe accuracy could have been improved by a thorough cleaning of gas systems/bores but again as IRC the 'fix' for a stuck gas piston was a shot of WD 40/brake cleaner(?) thru the gas port ! No shit.Naturally the GP became stuck again in rel. short order!

as I said a start -up class where the only instruction after a block of classroom was marks manship
which lasted 2wks total!Still it was a privelidge AFAIWC and remains about the farthest accurate shooting ive done although the ranges are available here courtesy of Natl Grasslands/ rel fair SD gunlaws. I simply dont have the equipment to hit point targets
beyond 500m.

Sir,Im intriqued by your posting as I recall with the 3x9 ART scope atop the M21 the steel silouette @ 900m was just a small point actually quite indistinct even in bright daylight, like you I cannot visualize even seeing a 1100m+ silouette w/ART scope. There were also std mil plastic silouettes placed at 100 m intervals to the 900m point. All of which were relatively easy to hit(verified by spotters-plastic ).For some reason the ratio of hits from 700-900m dropped considerably(for all shooters(SF to ordinarly 82nd trooper) the 700m almost a sure thing given proper attention..900m another story!
Was this a GI M21/ART scope or an aftermkt version,Circa? No disrespect or doubt about veracity implied or intended please!

I have at my disposal now near unlimited ranges(very flat natl grasslands, section upon section!) assuming you have the patience/physical ability to mechanically measure to said ranges I dont have suitable firearms. For instance a Savage tactical and suitable scope.I currently dont have ANY long range scoped rifles barring a puny 5.56 HBAR I use for P. dogs/coyotes to 300/and steel to 500 w/M855-BH-69gr match.
