I've shot the 600 Yd known distance range several times, 24 clicks up. 447 Yds by range finder shooting unopened pop cans. Very gratifying when you get a hit.

600 yards It was the 2nd. time I shot my new M1A. Did a 3x600 at the local range, worst 10 round string was 60 with 2 misses and high was 86. Be sure to take the chamber flag out before you put in a magazine, 2 times now I have had the flag slide up and pop the extractor out. Didn't get to shoot last weeks 3x600 because of that. DANG!

600yds iron sights with a M14/M1A, at Local XTC matches and Camp Perry. Mostly my own hand loads 168 smk, pushing about 2650 fps

1000yds with my 300wm bolt gun w/6.5-20x50 LR Leupold glass. 180gr Nosler BT or 190gr smk bullets both pushing a little over 3000 fps. On a private range in a cane field.

Question Range

Belong to a club here in southern Cal. and have shot my M1A's out to a 1000 yds. Each year my little band of brothers have a 1000 yd match (coming up next month as a matter of fact). Part of the match is sighters on the gong at 1050 yds. so that's the max I have shot my rifles to. My rifles do shoot a consistent 19 inch group at 1000 yds. but under a minute at 100 yds. So I would assume that the 19 inches is due to shooter error. This year I will use the Fulton built gas gun. The last time out I put 5 shots into 11 inches. it was very exciting. Just couldn't compete in the match due to work. Hoping this year will be better.

By the way. Fort Sill will let you shoot on there range's if you are a veteren on the day's when the range isn't being used by the trainee's.
The only problem is the hoop's you have to jump though to bring a weapon on post.
I was going to try to do it untill I found out about the red tape.It just isn't worth it.

wow, that is incredible. can't imagine what doing a tour of duty would be like in vietnam during that time with its political and military climate. appreciate your service.

were you a designated marksman (not sure if the role existed back then) or were you part of a more dedicated scout/sniper unit?

Hi
I was one of the first sniper's in the Americal Div. We really didn't have a program set up yet and the Div didn't really know how to use us yet. The Marine's had a much better program of useing their sniper's more effectively.
I was all so the company point man along with 3 other's because I carried the 14 and they wanted the fire power up front.
The other point men each had 1 M-14,1 Thompson, and the other point man started with a 16 but after about 2 week's was able to switch to a M-14 after seeing mine in action.

IC2(SS)19Z50C5,

This post was originally put up by SAPPNASTY, and somehow became mine. I couldn't make a hit like that if I walked up to the target and poked it with a pencil, even if I knew the distance. But to take a stab at answering your question, seeing as how he defined the distance in yards, that sounds plausible. Back in the late 80s, early 90s, when at Camp Perry in the butts, I was always amazed watching Marines print inside a softball size bull from 600 meters. Sounded like lady fingers going off, was a lot of fun, that is until the black rifle took over.

IC2: No, it's not a former military range. Just a VERY NICE range set up by some good' ol' country boys and a farmer that owns aloooooooooooooooooooooot of land here. The range is bar-none the best I have ever shot at. I thought I was shooting awesome with my Garand and M1A at 700 yards.....that is until I saw that they were shooting golf balls at 700 yards with thier rifles (with some high qaulity glass installed of course). Then I was like....well s*%t! lol

Well it is a great looking range with nice wind breaks on each side. Always nice to have a range like that to get good zeros...

Thanks for the feedback and I like the way Phinehas said that somehow it had become his.

Again, a great thread…Lets keep it up…

Thanks from Phinehas

I shot a 485 to win a Regional Gold for a Leg Match. That was my best leg ever, I think I shot a 194 at 600 yards with the thunder stick that day. Best was a 200 at 500 yards, but 600 yards is about furlong further back than 500 yards, (try it and you will see) and I never cleaned the target at 600 yards with the M1a.

I stopped shooting a service rifle at 1000 yards. Too frustrating. Target bull, what bull? Frame hold, what frame? Might as well have been a planetary hold trying to find something to aim at through all that mirage and hase.

175's are the only bullet to shoot at 1000 yards, had the 168's keyhole at that distance. 175's go in nose first.

Thanks from arcticdog
