In April I was shooting with some family and friends. Private property range. My bro-in-law and I were hitting a torso sized metal plate at 500 yds pretty consistently with open iron sights off of a bench.

I "usually" shoot Monday nights. There is a group of guys who meet up usually around 7pm. We usually sit around and shoot the sh*t and shoot some paper. In the winter months, the days are short and it gets quite cold so we shoot at an indoor 20y range. In the warmer months the action moves outside, to the 15-220y range.

I have no trouble hitting the 220y steel with the M1 (it is a generous 10" plate) and irons.

I have been itching to shoot out to 1000 for a few years now, and this past May I finally had the chance to shoot at a know distance range that had steel plates out to 1030y. It was quite a treat for me!

I made hits for the first time ever at 1030 shooting a Savage 10TR. But the real high point for me was making hits at 640 with my self tuned Chinese M-14s in a USGI fibreglass stock, all Chinese parts other than the op-rod and a USGI spring and NM front and rear sights. Granted the plate was a 18" square, but I was still pretty impressed with myself!

640y with irons is my personal best..... I couldn't figure out my dope out past 640, near as I can tell my hand loads are a bit light @ 2400fps and dropping subsonic before 800.....

I couldn't even come close to that with the SA standard that I brought out......

Cheers!

150 yards is the farthest I have accurately shot with my M1A. I was hoping that a range would open in my area out to 1000 yards soon but I think 500 will be the farthest. I may be able to get 500 on family property this winter.

As of this last weekend, 500yrds. A little belly match with the local High Power group. I was just happy to be on the target with the first shot. Only did two 20rd strings, but shot a 182 on the first and 172-3x on the second. WAY more fun that those reduced targets for the 100yrd matches.

630 yards, SW Virginia.

National Match M1A Stainless
Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 Hunting scope with Nikoplex Reticle

12" High at 100yds or a 496 yard zero. Holding 7.0 MOA high and 2.0 MOA to the left at 630. 10 inch steel plate. Several hits, some misses due to varying winds.

Will go North of 900 after my Mark 4 arrives.

I have shot my M1A/M21 out to 600 yards. However, in 2014 my shooting partner that day at Quantico shot his M1A at 800 and 1000 yards - with iron sights only....

...he has way more courage than me. (I'd be too embarrassed of misses at that range with my eyes. I use either a 10x, 12x or 20x scoped rifle for those long shots.) It's odd to see an M1 or M1A with the rear aperture cranked almost all the way up to near maximum elevation, but he had some good hits. He's a former USMC guy....my hats off to him, and even some of the young marines there were impressed...

Thanks from XXIV Corps

600 yds a year and a half ago at the CMP range in Talledega. Old timer at the range helped me get on paper. Prone looped up. Lake City Federal M80. Amazed I hit anything. "No two clicks the other left". Said the range guy at the CMP. They were happy to help. Rifle is on the avatar. Fairly new LRB with Wolfe Modified Standard weight barrel.

I have shot my long gone M1 at 600 yards back in the early 90's. So far only 100 yards with my M1A. Will be shooting it at 500 and 900 yards at a private range this June.

600 yards clanging steel with a scoped NM. It's the max at my range but I'd like to try further someday. FGMM 175 gr.

M1A 200yds. But the most fun was as at Ft. Sill in '76 shooting random pop-ups from 25 to 300 meters with a M-16. And then there was a time when I had a chance to pull the lanyard on a 105 shooting direct fire but don't remember the range. Got some good pics of the round exiting the barrel.

Awards Showcase

I shot an Appleseed KD at the Talladega CMP Marksmanship Park, we shot out to 600 yards. I was able to keep all shots on the target using iron sights.

Incredible range(s) and target scoring system.
Don't miss out on a chance to visit a shoot at the Talladega CMP.

Thanks from Beepermac
